Greetings!

It's a new year - a time to take stock of last years' hits and misses and set the course for 2009. Workplace Training is no exception! This year our newsletter takes on a fresh new look with ACE On Point.

The goal of our newsletter remains the same - to provide interesting and informative articles on current issues in workplace training, newsworthy items, and a variety of helpful hints. You can still look forward to receiving the Workplace Training newsletter in this new, user-friendly format.

Please be sure to take our brief survey, Your Opinion Matters. The results of this survey will provide valuable feedback on how we can best help you meet your training goals.

Your friends at Workplace Training.

Fairfax Water receives 2008 VAACE Award
Williams receives award for Fairfax Water
The spotlight shone on Fairfax Water and ACE during the Virginia Association of Adult and Continuing Education (VAACE) annual conference held October 15-17, 2008 in Williamsburg.

The VAACE Outstanding Workplace Education Partnership Award was presented to Howard Williams (retired) of Fairfax Water, who had led the effort to offer millwright apprenticeship instruction for Fairfax Water personnel. ACE workplace training staff worked with Mr. Williams to design and launch a multi-year instructional program for a trade area that had been previously under-recognized. As a result of the company and employee commitment to the program, over 20 employees were able to achieve Millwright Journeyman status and wage parity with other tradesmen at Fairfax Water.

The VAACE Outstanding Workplace Education Partnership Award recognizes an employer's commitment to the educational advancement of employees through a collaborative relationship with a public adult education agency.

During the 1930's Hershey built amusement parks, factories, hotels, and theaters. Read Chocolate and Sugar, Bricks and Mortar.

Instead of sending workers home during slow production periods, Toyota Corporation is using the current downtime to build worker skills and to brainstorm and improve production processes. Read Toyota Knows Brains.

ACE Apprenticeship and Trade & Industry programs have a wide variety of classes beginning in the winter months, typically slower times for many employers. Apprenticeship Mid-Year classes provide accelerated schedules beginning in January so employees can obtain a full year of trade-related instruction in six months. Trade & Industry offers DPOR-approved classes for continuing education, contractor's licensing, as well as network cabling certification. These classes are held at locations throughout the county.

Whether your training needs encompass technical skills for the trades, conflict resolution for frontline staff, or business English for your administrative staff, ACE has a class for you! Most ACE classes can be customized and brought to your worksite at a time convenient for you and your employees.
