Greetings!

There's nothing like a winter day - or night - for appreciating the comfort of home. What folks choose to do can make wintertime feel uniquely special, whether it's lingering over a warm meal with family and friends or engaging in a board game, a hobby, or a project.

With so much cold yet ahead of us (according to Punxsutawney Phil's prediction), an ACE class affords another way to make the most of wintry days and evenings. We have lots of "classy" suggestions to help you jazz up your home, stretch your dollar, and enjoy your time on the home front.

Beautiful Inside and Out
Affordable home projects

You can beautify your home without busting the 2009 household budget. For one thing, you can enhance a home landscape with what you glean from classes in gardening, bricklaying for the homeowner, or brick patios and walkways and save a ton of money.

If your focus is indoors instead, then interior design, picture framing, beginner's woodworking, furniture restoration, or floral design classes can empower you to perk up your surroundings at a fraction of the usual cost.

There's more to a home than just its surface appeal, though. Tackle your own repairs after getting expert instruction on home maintenance, electrical skills, or do-it-yourself plumbing. Ready for a bigger project? Try finishing a basement with guidance from instructor Earl Fox!

Did You Know?
What to do with old TVs and ordinary vinegar

Fairfax County will accept your old televisions, computers, and peripheral electronic devices on designated Electric Sundays. Circle February 8 or March 8, 10a-3p on your calendar and tell your friends!

Plain old white vinegar will safely dissolve rust, whiten grout, silken your dog's coat, and keep cats from eating your plants. It'll even keep car windows frost-free overnight!

The Art of Relaxing
Off-the-couch ideas

Feeling trapped inside a stressed-out life? A deliberate change in surroundings, activity, and pace can offer a much-needed return into ease of mind and being.

Many adults find that a class in meditation, memoir-writing, genealogy, chess, or digital photography, brings relaxation, fulfillment, even new friends without a heavy outlay of money. Did you know that you can even take a class to change your energy?

Course choices for hands-on fun are plentiful, too: fruit and vegetable carvingcreative watercolor, silk painting, knittingpendant necklace, or beginning drawing, to name a few.

Relaxation, the ultimate stress-buster

Virginia Is for Lovers
Successful slogan turns 40

Four decades ago, what started out as "Virginia is for history lovers," "Virginia is for beach lovers" and "Virginia is for mountain lovers," soon morphed into Virginia is for Lovers, implying that whatever visitors loved they could find in Virginia. The slogan debuted in 1969 and became one of the best known in the travel industry. It's still going strong.
