The James Irvine Foundation to Support

"Dia del Niño" with Santa Ana's El Centro

Arts Orange County has been awarded a grant from The James Irvine Foundation to support its plans to offer "Dia del Niño" during its 2012 and 2013 Imagination Celebration festivals.  "Dia del Niño" is a traditional Latin-American holiday that celebrates children and takes place each April.  ArtsOC's "Dia del Niño" will be presented in partnership with El Centro Cultural de Mexico, and will take place in downtown Santa Ana on Sunday, April 29, 2012.  The day's activities will include traditional indigenous and contemporary Latino arts and cultural activities.  ArtsOC's program coordinator for the event is Sara Guerrero, founder and artistic director of Breath of Fire Latina Theatre Ensemble in Santa Ana.  She also serves on the faculty of the South Coast Repertory Youth Conservatory and is a graduate of California Institute of the Arts.  El Centro Cultural de Mexico is an all-volunteer organization in Santa Ana that engages the community in cultural, educational, and artistic activities that strengthen their identities, develop their talents and develop a sense of leadership.

"The Landscape of Movement"

motion/TRIBE Dance Company

Saturday, January 21, 11 am - 1 pm

Admission Free

During The Landscape of Movement, spectators will be transformed into performers when dance company motion/TRIBE and artistic director Marie de la Palme lead visitors through a series of workshop stations that explore the themes of movement and choreography. The audience will then experience an hour-long performance as motion/TRIBE demonstrates the concepts explored during the workshop. Some members of the audience will have the unique opportunity to partake in one of the numbers utilizing the movements they were taught. This outdoor event will take place throughout the beautiful Great Park Palm Court.

 

motion/TRIBE is a dance company of seasoned professionals.  The company's award-winning repertoire  includes works in contemporary ballet, aerial acrobatics, ballroom, tap, yoga, and modern dance. A veteran in commercial dance, concert dance, and choreography, Marie de la Palme is now a full-time faculty member at Irvine Valley College and the Artistic Director of IVC's Performing Dance Ensemble.

Muckenthaler Center Awarded Grant from National Endowment for the Arts


The NEA's Fast Track Challenge America program has awarded a $10,000 grant to Fullerton's Muckenthaler Cultural Center t
o support the Latino Audience Development Program, a series of performances and exhibits highlighting Latino arts and culture. Activities will include performances by Chilean flute group Chaski, Brazilian choro group Grupo Falso Baiano, and Mexican son jarocho group Son del Centro.


 

The Kenneth A. Picerne Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2012 Artist Outreach Project! The Foundation will award up to 20 artists $12,000 each for a one-year grant to provide educational, mentoring, and/or therapeutic arts experiences for people of any age group who lack opportunities to engage in meaningful arts programs.  More details here.

Association for Jewish Theatre 2012 International Conference in LA


The annual international conference by the Association for Jewish Theatre will be held in LA, February 5-8.  Keynote speaker:  Richard Montoya (of LA's Culture Clash),  who has explored his own crypto-Jewish Chicano roots.
