Did you try carpooling this month?

Thanks to all who participated in Carpool Week 2012 and doing your part to be sustainable and to reduce traffic congestion!

Congratulations to our Carpool Group Contest winners Kristina Rostorotsky (MMM Group) and Vivek Sharma (Town of Markham)!

Carpooling three days a week to and from Midtown Toronto to work near Leslie and Hwy. 7, in Markham, they have benefited from using a HOV lane and sharing gas costs, while telling jokes and laughing along the way.

Commuting to and from a hospital?

Professionals in the healthcare sector came together to discuss improving commuter options for hospital staff. The session provided an opportunity to cover transportation topics unique to the hospital setting.

Keynote speaker Paulo Nunes- Ueno, Director of Transportation and Sustainability at Seattle's Children's Hospital, provided insight into their successful sustainable transportation initiatives. Representatives from GTHA hospitals presented case studies including York Central Hospital, a SCMRH member employer.

What is Smart Commute Markham, Richmond Hill?

Smart Commute is a not-for-profit sustainability initiative of the municipalities of Markham and Richmond Hill, York Region and Metrolinx. We help local employers and commuters, like you, explore different commute choices like carpooling, cycling and transit. Our goal is to ease gridlock, improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while making your commute less expensive and more enjoyable.

Your savings! In just five years, Carpool Zone users in the GTA have saved over ten million dollars and prevented  24,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions; the equivalent of about 9 million bricks!
