Smart Commute Markham, Richmond Hill Local Heroes!

Smart Commute MRH would like to recognise individuals in our community who have taken a path toward environmental sustainability by leaving their vehicles at home and considering other ways to commute. For example:

ebike hero 1

Lidia Kafieh understands the importance of the Smart Commute program and is disappointed to see an increase of air pollution entering in our atmosphere by single occupancy vehicles. To help mitigate this issue, Lidia uses her full electric bike to run various errands in her community and is now proud to be doing her part to cut emissions!

Maurice Masliah, Ph.D (from HDR | iTRANS) was a first time participant in our 2011 Bike to Work Day event (which encourages local employees to commute to work by bicycle) where he cycled 15 km to and from work on that day. Since then, this event has inspired Maurice to bike to work at least once a week, as he now understands that cycling is healthier for him, the environment, and his wallet!

What is Smart Commute Markham, Richmond Hill?

Smart Commute is a not-for-profit sustainability initiative of the municipalities of Markham and Richmond Hill, York Region and Metrolinx. We help local employers and commuters, like you, explore different commute choices like carpooling, cycling and transit. Our goal is to ease gridlock, improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while making your commute less expensive and more enjoyable.

Your savings! In just five years, Carpool Zone users in the GTA have saved over ten million dollars and prevented  24,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions; the equivalent of about 9 million bricks!
