Let's make a difference in 2010!
Did you know an operating vehicle emits a range of gases from its tailpipe into the atmosphere? Some emissions, principally carbon dioxide (CO2), are classified as "greenhouse gases" (GHG's) because they are contributing to the changing of the world's climate.
The one simple and effective way to reduce the production of CO2 emissions from vehicles is by choosing to eliminate unnecessary vehicle use.
Can Canada make a change? Yes we can!
Do we have the will? From our surveys, Smart Commute 404-7 has determined - Yes, we do!
Let's say it out loud ... a New Year Pledge: "We can - and will - make a difference!"
Make a Start - for a healthier New Year 2010 - Register on Carpool Zone: Here!

Designate a Driver for Seasonal Visits
Smart Commute 404-7, under the direction of the Markham Board of Trade and Richmond Hill Chamber of Commerce, promotes ways to ease traffic and vehicle emissions along your commute, around the Highways 404 and 7 in our communities. We especially want to remind you to carpool and vanpool to your holiday visits, this busy time of year. You'll save time in traffic, by being able to use the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes. You also save on fuel consumption, parking, vehicle emissions, and stress.
Speaking of stress, why not take the next step - have a designated driver, to make sure you have a safe season, too!

Smart Commute Awards
Smart Commute GTA & Hamilton held its third annual Employer of the Year awards November 17th in the historic Distillery District in Toronto. During the awards night two of Smart Commute 404-7 employers were recognized, AMD for "Employer of the Year" and URS recieved an Honourable mention.
"Employer of the Year"
Smart Commute 404-7 is proud to announce AMD as the winner of the Smart Commute "Employer of the Year" for Markham and Richmond Hill. AMD offers a wide variety of programs to help employees carpool, take transit, cycle and telework. AMD has helped lead the way in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing healthy transportation choices. More than 1, 200 participants across the AMD North American sites take part in AMD's Go Green program which has been very successful and they are working on plans to bring this program to their sites worldwide.
| Richard Conohan, AMD's Supervisor, BDC Facilities, Security & Site Services, accepts the Smart Commute award on behalf of AMD-Markham. With Richard (from left) are Smart Commute 404-7 Assistant Manager Basil Marcello, Markham Councillor Gordon Landon, Smart Commute 404-7 Project Manager (acting) George Flint, Project Assistant Jennifer Maestre, Mr. Conohan, Commuter Options Advisor (Markham) Wincy Tsang, Administrative Assistant Lucy Chen, Awards MC Christine Diakos, and Commuter Options Advisor (Richmond Hill) Paul Bradbury. |
In addition to the participation of AMD Canada in programs with Smart Commute 404-7 in Markham (i.e. Clean Air Commute, Bike to Work Day, Carpool Week, and Car Free Day), AMD also holds employee events across North America to further promote commuting solutions, such as AMD Bike/Walk month in May and Commute Solutions month in September. Since the inception of AMD Go Green in July 2007, AMD employees in Markham have avoided driving more than 775,000 kilometres, conserving up to 78,000 litres of gasoline and preventing as much as 182,000 kilograms of CO2 emissions. This collaboration with Smart Commute 404-7 allows AMD to take advantage of synergies between the organizations and work to achieve their common goals.
