Sen. Wyden joins with Senate colleagues to support small ports
Senator Ron Wyden's office led an effort this week to bring awareness to the needs at small ports nationwide. The Senator circulated a letter highlighting the challenges small ports are facing in the FY2013 budget, which was submitted to the Senate Energy & Water Appropriations Subcommittee yesterday. The letter encourages the Subcommittee to consider small port needs as they develop their funding vehicle for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the budget year starting October 1st. Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) also signed on to show their support.
Funding for our region's small ports is a centerpiece of PNWA's advocacy efforts for the coming year. During our Mission to Washington, we highlighted the FY2013 funding challenges small ports are facing in the Northwest and throughout the nation. We continue to strongly advocate for inclusion of additional Operations & Maintenance (O&M) funding, similar to what we saw for FY2012. We are hoping to see more robust funding in the pots as well - the $30 million for small ports was greatly appreciated, but there are still so many unmet needs in the Northwest.
PNWA looks forward to working with our entire Northwest delegation as we continue to seek funding for critical navigation projects in the region. Download our PNWA Supported Corps Projects document to learn about the funding we are seeking for small navigation projects, deep draft channels, jetties, and locks throughout the Northwest in the coming year. |
The 78th Annual Mission to Washington lays the groundwork for 2012
Our 78th Annual DC fly-in was a great success, helping to lay the groundwork for our priority issues and projects for 2012. We had over 50 PNWA members join us, to discuss Corps funding and priorities, National Ocean Policy, the Global Wheat Outlook, BPA hot button issues, the 2012 campaign season and much, much more. We cannot thank our sponsors for this event enough. Year after year, our member organizations step up to support our Taste the Northwest reception on Capitol Hill. This year, we had over 300 attendees, including Members of the Northwest Congressional Delegation, their staff, federal agency officials, and Corps folks from Headquarters and our own local districts and division. The support from our dedicated members and attendees made it all possible.
