Greetings!

In a tough economic climate, having a negative balance on your checking account on occasion can seem less like a shock and more like a given.  However, avoiding overdrafts completely can lead to a stronger financial outlook and money back in your pocket each month.

Leaders Credit Union wants to help you achieve overdraft independence by educating you on some simple but effective ways to manage your checking account and stay out of the negative for good.  Continue reading below!

             Survey

A couple weeks ago, we asked you to participate in an End of Year Survey for 2010 and you were instrumental in sharing insights with us about what you like and dislike about Leaders CU.  We are very thankful to each and every one of you that participated, and we want to receive more feedback from you to help us determine what products and services are best to offer next in 2011!  Please join us in this effort by clicking here to answer one poll question about new products and services.

How does overdraft work?

Overdraft fees are triggered by not having enough money in your account for a cash withdrawal at an ATM, a pre-authorized electronic payment, a check, or a debit card transaction.

Some banks also charge a second overdraft fee if the overdraft and fee are not paid back in a few days. "Sustained" overdraft fees are either another flat fee or a fee per day.  This, of course, isn't the case with Leaders.

The most common of overdrafts occur when a consumer has made a deposit and assumes that the money is instantly available.  This is an incorrect assumption for most financial institutions, because most have a "posting delay" between when the transaction takes place and when the funds are released for use.  However, Leaders makes deposits instantly available to our members because our ATMs operate as online after-hours branches.  Simply make a deposit at one of our branch ATMs, key in the exact amount of the deposit, and within moments it is available for use in your account.

"Credit when you Debit"...most of the time.

For years, we've told you to "Credit when you Debit", and it is still the most safe and secure way to complete transactions at Point-of-Sale machines.  For instance, whether in the grocery or convenience store, or at a department store, signing for a transaction rather than keying in your PIN is a more secure method because it makes identity theft more difficult.

However, signing for a transaction (credit), can take longer to process through your checking account.  If your balance is low at any particular time, the best way to more accurately monitor your available funds is to either withdraw the amount needed from an ATM or use your PIN for the transaction (debit).  This will help to reduce or eliminate the number of overdraft fees that are charged to your account.  REMEMBER: if you have opted-into overdraft protection, financial institutions will not keep you from going into a negative balance, so it is your responsibility to understand the difference between an available and actual balance in your checking account.

Leaders can help you to avoid overdraft completely, with an Overdraft Loan*.  Overdraft Loans can be tied directly to your checking account, much like your savings, and will only be used when and if you ever need them.  Overdraft Loans also only withdraw the amount that you need and are paid back along with a set amount of interest.  Check our Consumer Rates page for details.  By applying for an Overdraft Loan, you are more in control of your fees and can manage your account more successfully.

Use Technology to Stay Out of Trouble

What if you had a tool that would allow you to manage your account day or night, weekday or weekend, and would notify you if you were in danger of incurring overdraft fees?

Lucky for you, you're a Leaders Credit Union member and we offer that exact tool!  It's called Home Banking with Bill Pay, and it's 100% free to you.  With Home Banking, you can log into your account and view pending and closed transactions, view images of your checks, transfer funds between your Leaders accounts, and pay your auto, home and consumer loans with Leaders.  Not only that, but you can also set reminders to arrive to email or phone that notify you of low balances on your accounts!

Try FinanceWorks in Home Banking, and you'll be able to set budgets for yourself, view trends in your spending, and categorize every deposit and expense.  Have a question about how any of these tools work?  No problem!  Simply call 731-664-1784 and we will walk you through the process step-by-step.
