Grace Lutheran Preschool offers two classes, the four year old class meets three times a week and the three year old class meets two times a week. The student enrollment varies between 30-60 students, 1/4 -1/2 of whom are unchurched. In 2008, our congregation remodeled an existing classroom to serve as the three year old classroom and church nursery. God has also provided a large playground area with approximately ½ acre of grass for running.
Each classroom has pets which provide opportunities for the students to learn responsibility and kindness. Both the turtle and fish aquariums have water pumps providing soothing sounds for the students. When the preschool started 33 years ago the pet was a rat and although we have gone through generations of rats, we still have two pet rats in the classroom. Each spring turkeys are raised from small chicks to teenagers. Frequently pigeons, dogs, cats and rabbits come to visit. Students can also observe and pet the church neighbor's horses.
Mother's Day has provided our school with another opportunity for outreach. Students are invited to sing in the Sunday morning church service. Following the church service photos are taken of each student's family. Later that week, each family is presented with a professional picture. We thank our Outreach Board for providing special publicity for this event as well as others throughout the school year.
The closing day of each school year at Grace Lutheran Preschool, Caldwell , Idaho is a very special day. Students are encouraged to invite their family and friends to participate in the day's activities. Throughout the church's parking lot centers are designed. Discoveries can be made in science with experiments including wind (balloon) powered boats, insect sound magnifiers, color mixing and soda bottle launches. A jump house is assembled for using those large motor skills...this one is a big hit! Even the young siblings have opportunities to jump and explore. Listening to God's Word is demonstrated by the students as the teacher tells the Bible story of Christ's return to heaven using balloon puppets. A puppet representing Jesus is filled with helium and allowed to ascend into the heavens as the students watch; just as the disciples watched. "They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 'Men of Galilee ' they said, 'why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.'" Acts 1:10-11
Grace Lutheran Preschool continues to extend opportunities for both parents and congregation members to take a look at what is happening in the classroom. Through the eyes of a camera the experiences in the classroom can be shared with many. This year we have added a special magnetic picture board between the classrooms. This simple idea serves as another invitation for parents to enter the church facility, enabling them to become comfortable and familiar with the building and those serving in our church.
Grace Lutheran Preschool has been blessed with a very stable staff each bringing some special talent to the program. The teachers have varied interests from 4-H leader, public school board member, artist and scientist. God has truly provided us with what He knows we need to be spreading His Word.
