Collegeville Market : Some's good. More's better.

And every week we have more of the best and freshest local food

We got raves on the food we served at our Barbecue Breakfast last Saturday.

And even though we won't be firing up the grill at the market this week, it doesn't mean you can't do it at home.

Check out our recipes (including our secret ingredients) for yummy Roasted Peppers and Onions and Grilled Upside Apple Pie.

Luckily, you can get everything you need at the market to have your own feast at home.

Pick of the Week:
Fresh from our Farms

Frecon Farms

One of the largest peach harvests in yearsand a very early apple harvest means a bounty of fruit for you. Get it while it's here!

They've got:

  • Apples...including Gala, Ginger Gold, Ozark Gold, Paula Red Apples!
  • Pears...including Red Bartlett, Bartlett and Seckle Pears
  • Flaming Fury Peaches
  • Red Gold Nectarines
  • And more to come!

Frecon, in Boyertown, has been growing some of Pennsylvania's finest tree fruits since 1944.  on the season, they bring us: cherries, peaches, plums, blueberries, apricots, nectarines, raspberries, apples, pears, pumpkins, squash and more.

North Star Orchard - Ike and Lisa Kerschner strive to grow a very diverse selection of high quality tree fruits and vegetables on their Cochranville Farm. They decided long ago that selling the farm's produce directly to the people who eat the items is the most satisfying part of the farming they do.

Farmer Lisa Kerschner says this week we can expect:

  • Hosui Asian pears,
  • several varieties of apples (from sweet to tart!),
  • and the first of this year's apple and Asian pear cider!
  • The peaches are just about gone, but they'll bring them if they still have some!
  • Veggie selections will include lettuce, beans, sweet peppers, Yukon Gold potatoes, and maybe some other goodies (if they're ready) like tomatoes, eggplant, and kale.

PV Produce

They are back to school, but back at our market with lots of fresh tomatoes grown in their organic garden at Perkiomen Valley High School. The kids from the "Take Action!" environmental group are brightening up our world and our market.

Out picking. Be back soon:

Down Home Goodness, Grown Naturally

Paul, Hana and Luca will be back next week.

Yellow Springs Farm Native Plant Nursery and Artisanal Goat Cheese Dairy, founded by Catherine and Al Renzi, is located in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. The farm and nursery consists of an historic farmhouse, dairy barn, a springhouse with pond on 8 acres of land. Al and Catherine raise goats on site and make fresh cheese every day.

Our Recipes

Plus a Confession...or Two...or Three

Confession #1 - We didn't grill the peppers that we served on our delicious Bendy Brook sausage and egg and St. Peter's Bakery bread sandwiches last week.

If we had, Rachael and I might have been serving you Saturday dinner instead of breakfast and lunch. In order to have 10 pounds of peppers ready for  market opening at 9 a.m., we pre-roasted them the night before and warmed them on the grill at the event.

Confession #2 - There was more to those pepper and onions than peppers and onions.

The recipe, (and I use the term loosely) evolved from my cooking style, which usually involves pouring a glass of wine, looking around the kitchen and throwing things together.

One day, earlier this summer, my kitchen was bursting with peppers, basil and tomatoes. I knew I loved roasted peppers and I knew I loved roasted tomatoes, so why not roast both together.

The results were great, the sweet and acidic juice of the caramelized tomatoes and the fresh zing of basil perfectly complement the charred peppers. It's great on sandwiches, eggs, chicken, steak, pasta or as a delicious bruschetta topping on a St. Peter's baguette.

You can even add a few hot peppers to the mix to spice things up a bit. So here it is.

Roasted (Not Grilled)

Peppers and Onions

Ingredients:

10 bell peppers, cored, seeded and diced into 1-inch pieces

2 medium onions, diced into one inch pieced

2 medium tomatoes, diced into one inch piecesor a pint of grape tomatoes, halved

4-5 cloves of garlic, minced

1 cup of fresh basil, chopped

¼ cup olive oil

1 T course salt

Fresh ground pepper

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Toss ingredients together in a 9 x 12 inch roasting pan. Roast for an hour or more, depending on your oven. Serve hot, or cool and serve on sandwiches. Serves about 8.

Confession #3 - I ate three servings of this last weekend. Lucky, it's good for me, right?

Grilled Upside Down Apple Pie

What better way to celebrate the best of summer and the best of the fall? Cinnamon Apples, hot off the grill, bring homey, comfort food to warm September nights.

Ingredients:

4 apples (Josh from Frecon Farms says Gala have good sugar content for grilling)

1 cup lemon/lime soda

2 T melted butter

1 t. vanilla

¼ cup sugar and 1 t. cinnamon, combined

1 small container Greek vanilla yogurt

½ cup milk or almond milk

 Marcy's Granola

Directions:

Core and slice apples into rings (You should get about 5 slices per apple.) Pour soda in a shallow bowl. Briefly dip apple slices in the bowl and remove to a plate. (The citric acid prevents browning as a lemon would without the sour taste.)

Heat the grill to medium high.

Mix together yogurt and milk to form a thick, creamy sauce. Refrigerate.

Melt butter and stir in vanilla. Brush apple slices lightly on both sides with the butter and vanilla mixture, and sprinkle lightly with cinnamon sugar.

Grill apple about 4 minutes on each side until they have grill marks and are warmed through.

Layer 4 apple slices on a plate or bowl. Spoon yogurt-cream on top, and sprinkle liberally with granola. Serve immediately.

marcyMarcy's Granola, which has lots of whole nuts and dried fruit and just a touch of sugar works perfect with this recipe. It lets the flavor of the apple shine through without overpowering it with sugar. This is a quick, healthy dessert that you can feel good about eating.

Breakfast of Champions

Those of you who made it to the market last week and were able to try our breakfast sandwiches now know for sure what real eggs and real sausage taste like.

Nevin Mast's pastured pork and eggs brought rave reviews from everyone. The sausage has absolutely no fillers so it is not only wholesome and delicious, but it is a welcome treat for those on gluten-free diets. And the eggs are so tasty and fresh.
Now you can make your own sandwiches this week piled high on St. Peter's bread!
