Speaker's House Picnic and Living History Day Scheduled for Saturday July 31, 2010

On Saturday July 31, 2010 The Speaker's House will be hosting their Third Annual Picnic and Living History Day at the home of Frederick Muhlenberg, 151 West Main Street, Trappe, PA from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM.  Each year since inception, the event has grown bigger and better.  The Speaker's House was the home of Frederick Muhlenberg, first and third Speaker of the House of Representatives and the first signer of the Bill of Rights.

In addition to an outstanding barbecue meal of pulled pork (provided by The French Quarter Bistro Café in Royersford PA), fresh corn on the cob,  homegrown watermelon, chips and a beverage of choice, this year a number of living history demonstrations will be reenacted.  Demonstrations include: woodworking, blacksmithing, spinning, dying and open-hearth cooking.  Also planned is a visit from the Revolutionary War Unit, Historical Military Impressions. There will be tents, flags and military demonstrations at 11 a.m. and 1p.m. (approximately one half hour each time).  Also planned are continuous tours of The Speaker's House plus glimpses of artifacts uncovered over the past several years of archeological excavation on site.

Costs for the event (with meal) are:  $10 adults, $7 seniors, $5 children 6-12, FREE for children under 6 years of age.  Donations for "tour only" are $3 for adults, FREE for children.

Water ChestnutsJoin the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy for a Pulling Party

Volunteers are needed for the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy's Pulling Parties where efforts will be made to combat the overwhelming infestation of he European Water Chestnut (Trapa Natan) on the Unami Creek.  The Trapa Natan, is a highly invasive aquatic partially submerged plant.  It threatens our aquatic habitat by out-competing the native flora, supplying little to no nutritional value to our native fauna and clogging up our waterways inhibiting boating and fishing.  These plants are a very aggressive spreader; reproducing both through seed production and vegetation parts.  Seeds and plant parts float and can move downstream and infest other locations.

During the pulling parties, participates will walk up and down the Unami Creek, surveying for new infestation, remove any plants or seeds present and monitor potential locations for future infestations.

The next Pulling Party will take place on August 6 and 7 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon.

The Conservancy will supply:

*the boats but they are looking for volunteers with canoes to help out
*all gloves, bags and other supplies needed

The Conservancy is looking for:

* volunteers with trucks to transport the pulled weeds to a local composter
* volunteers to complete stream surveys either in a pair or solo

For additional information or to volunteer to help, contact Emma Melvin at

Wishing TreeTell Us What You Think!

So far over 300 people have told us what they think about starting a Farmers' Market in Collegeville.  People are overwhelmingly supportive and excited to bring farm fresh produce and products to Main Street.  However,
The Collegeville Main Street Program (CMSP) Farmers Market Committee Still wants more input so that they understand the kinds of products that should be at the market and choose the best day to hold the market.

The survey should take no longer than 5 minutes to fill out and it is simple to complete. All you have to do is click on the link below and then mark your choices and enter any comments.  All survey results will be kept confidential.

Progress on the market will be broadcast through various sources including our monthly newsletter, newspaper coverage, etc.

Berman Glass PhotoBerman Museum at Ursinus College Celebrates 20 Years; Dedicates New Wing, Opens Art to the Community

Celebrating a milestone 20th year, The Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College is opening its collection to the community with the addition of a new, visible storage wing. A distinctive glass façade and its rooftop sculpture terrace foster renewed interaction between art and the community, and allow immediate accessibility of the permanent collection.

Two exhibitions and a major symposium on museums and their role in the community, will mark the wing's opening and the Museum's 20-year anniversary.

The 4,200 square-foot Henry W. and June Pfeiffer Wing caps a $4 million expansion and renovation project designed by the Philadelphia architectural firm Towers & Miller. The addition provides storage and lecture space, a works on paper study area and new galleries including the Philip and Muriel Berman Foundation Sculpture Terrace. The visibility of the Museum's permanent collection is enhanced through the addition of state-of-the-art open storage vitrines. Before the wing, there were more than 3,000 paintings, drawings, sculpture and cultural artifacts in the Berman permanent collection which had to be housed in basement storage.

"The new Pfeiffer Wing, an imaginative, welcoming space that is open, transparent, dynamic and light, echoes the philosophical foundation of the museum's mission to capture and engage a diverse audience," according to Director Lisa Hanover. "The magnificent wing, inside and out, truly makes the Museum a national model for academic art museums," she said. "Our goal was that the collection would be visible beyond the walls of the museum."

The historic stone building was originally constructed in 1921 as the Alumni Memorial Library and was later used as a student union. The Museum was dedicated in 1989, when the late Philip and Muriel Berman, business leaders and philanthropists, found a home for their extraordinary collections of contemporary sculpture, American paintings, works on paper and folk art, joining an existing collection of 18th and 19th Century American and European paintings. Twenty years later, the Museum houses more than 4,000 notable works of art and attracts more than 35,000 visitors annually. The new Henry W. and June Pfeiffer Wing is named for longtime Trustee and museum supporter Henry 'Hank' Pfeiffer, Class of 1948, and his late wife, June.

Pedestrian  Safety for Kids (and their Adults)

We're in the middle of the summer and there are lots of kids are walking on our streets.  Parents, please make sure to teach your children how to stay safe on the sidewalks this summer and as we get closer to going back to school!

Walking Safety
·         Walk on a sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the street, facing oncoming traffic. (Parents, always follow this rule even when you think your kids aren't watching.)
·         Walking at night? Be sure to wear light-colored or reflective clothing so drivers can see you. Always be prepared and bring a flashlight in your bag/backpack/pocket just in case you end up being out after dark.

Crossing the Street:
·         Before you cross:  Look left, right, and left again to make sure no cars are coming, and keep looking both ways until you reach the other side. (This is VERY important!)
·         Always cross the street at a corner or at a crosswalk. Obey all traffic signals. (Make sure to teach your children what a crosswalk is, and what each traffic signal means.)
·         If you are on a residential street and a car appears to be slowing to let you cross, stay put until you've made eye contact with the driver and he/she indicates that you should cross in front of the car. (sometime cars may appear to be slowing to let you cross, but they may not actually be aware of you there). Always make sure that there are no other cars coming in either direction!

Playing Near Streets
·         When your children are playing outside, have them play as far away from the street or parking lot as possible. (This is very important to teach your kids, especially during summer months when children are often less-supervised.)
·         Please talk to your kids about street safety.  If a toy or pet goes out into the street, children should NOT go after it -have them ask a trusted adult to help get it back.
