Censorship
Community Tree Management Institute Offered by Penn State

Today as we see the trend of migration away from our cities and boroughs beginning to reverse, communities that offer the best quality of life will prosper. Beautiful and well-maintained public trees are an indispensible contributor to the quality of life.  Healthy and sustainable urban forests provide many environmental benefits to our communities.  They intercept millions of gallons of rainwater, reduce energy costs, attract businesses, tourists and residents, increase real estate values and have even been shown to reduce crime and violence.

But the urban forest, like the rest of our community infrastructure, requires protection and care to provide the maximum benefit. Having a knowledgeable and committed group of residents serving on a municipal tree commission is the best way to assure that public trees receive proper maintenance, and are not indiscriminately damaged or removed. To provide the training required to be an effective tree commission member, Penn State Cooperative Extension, along with cooperating organizations, will be offering the Community Tree Management Institute this spring at the Penn State New Kensington Campus on May 21st and 22nd. Topics include:  Enacting a Municipal Tree Ordinance, Contracting Tree Work, Working With the Media, and Planning for Trees.

Registration is required by May 10th. The registration fee is $85 which includes lunch, breaks and materials (including Landscape Tree Factsheets, a $30 value). For more information or to register, contact Mark Remcheck at Penn State Cooperative Extension, 412-473-2540 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              412-473-2540      end_of_the_skype_highlighting begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              412-473-2540      end_of_the_skype_highlighting or mar15@psu.edu.
Crossing StreetFoot Smarts
From the Collegeville Police Department and CMSP Pedestrian Safety Committee

Pedestrian Safety tips for crossing the street:

Before you move on and read something else, take a quick look here.  You may learn something that you didn't know.
  • Remember:  Even though they are supposed to be paying attention to their surroundings, drivers are human.  They may not be looking out for pedestrians.  The good news:  You can always be alert and walk defensively to protect yourself.
  • Visualize the curb (or edge of the road if there's no curb) as a stop sign - stop and make sure it is clear to cross.  Look left, then right, then left again for moving cars before you step into the street (even at a pedestrian crosswalk).
  • If the intersection is equipped with an electronic pedestrian activation system, push the button and wait for the crossing signal.  It will give you more time to cross safely.  Always keep alert for motorists making right turns or running a red light - they're out there and you know it.  Watch out for them.
  • Put your cell phone away and concentrate on safely crossing the street.
  • On a multiple-lane roadway, make sure all vehicles have come to a complete stop and you have made eye contact with the drivers before crossing.
  • Don't yell and shout, throw objects, or engage in other horseplay near or in the road.  This can easily distract drivers, who may then strike a pedestrian or a stopped vehicle.
  • If a car is parked where you are crossing, look to make sure there is no driver and that the car is not running.  Then go to the edge of the car and look left, look right and left again to see if cars are coming.  Make sure you are seen.  Never dart out into the street.
The bottom line:

Cross the street with the purpose of arriving safely at the other side.  Watch approaching vehicles and do not assume that they have seen you.  The driver may be tired, impaired by a physical condition, intoxicated or distracted.  You could be seriously injured or killed.  You may have the "right of way," but it is not worth being "dead right."

Ursinus Dance Company Restages American Swing Masterpiece

Legendary jazz dance choreographer Danny Buraczeski will be on campus to work and dance with professor Cathy Young to restage his designated American Dance Masterpiece, Swing Concerto, as part of a competitive National Endowment for the Arts grant obtained by the Ursinus Dance Department.

The concert also will feature new works by guest artists Melissa Chisena, ballet, and Marilyn and Sekou Sylla, African Dance, in addition to works by faculty Chris Aiken and Cathy Young.
Swing Concerto
"Last spring Ursinus was awarded $10,000 from the American Masterpieces: Dance-College Component, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts with Dance/USA, for the restaging of Swing Concerto by premier concert jazz dance choreographer Danny Buraczeski. Swing Concerto is a 1993 piece for nine dancers by Buraczeski. Now on the faculty at Southern Methodist University, Buraczeksi, after a career on Broadway, formed the company JAZZDANCE by Danny Buraczeski, which has performed all over the United States and internationally.

Swing Concerto blends musical traditions, from Klezmer to big-band swing to Eastern European folk dance and the Lindy Hop, what has been called a metaphor for the American immigration experience.

The residency is also a reunion of sorts.  Young, assistant Professor of Dance and co-director of the Dance Program at Ursinus, was an assistant for Buraczeski as a dancer in Minneapolis, and danced in the original performances of the piece. She has said that in reconstructing the piece, she hopes students will also learn the place of swing dancing in American culture.

The performance will be April 22 through 24

Mining the Environment: Art, Ethics and Environmentalism

Thursday, April 8, 2010
Miller4:30 PM - 6:00 PM

Jewelry designer and metalsmith Christina Miller will speak about Ethical Metalsmiths, a network of concerned jewelers and metalsmiths who realize how their craft connects them to the origins of the materials they use, including human values, emotions and cultural traditions.  The demand for ethically-sourced materials has led to their innovative Radical Jewelry Makeover, a collaborative "mining" project that brings together a local community, a gallery and a group of jewelry and metalsmithing students to transform unwanted jewelry into exciting new work. The project raises public awareness about hardrock mining issues, material sourcing and the potential of recycling.  The collaborative effort challenges taste and tradition, generates contemporary art jewelry and offers a novel alternative to the usual retail jewelry marketplace.
