Collegeville Main Street Program and Borough to Hold Community Interest Meeting

The Collegeville Main Street Program (CMSP) and the Borough of Collegeville will host a community interest meeting on Monday, June 22nd at 7:00 PM at Borough Hall.  The meeting, open to the public, is designed to introduce people to Wakefern Food Corporation and ShopRite store owner, Jim Mandanci.  Wakefern and Mandanci have expressed an interest in opening a supermarket in the Borough.  In addition, CMS and the Borough hope to begin gauging whether a store such as ShopRite would be supported by those living and working in the area.
The CMSP Economic Restructuring (ER) Committee and the Borough have been focusing efforts on recruiting unique businesses to the Main Street and Borough that are likely to thrive and meet the needs of those in the region.  Says Borough Council woman and Chair of the ER committee, Andrea Baptiste "We want to make sure as best we can that any business that sets up shop here can be successful.  It isn't good for them or the community if one or two years down the road they find themselves struggling and end up closing.  We want to talk about their (Wakefern and Mandanci) business plans, get feedback from townspeople and other shoppers, and lend assistance where needed if the plans move forward.
Wakefern Food Corporation is the nation's largest retailer-owned (non-farm) cooperative in the United States and is comprised of 45 members who independently own and operate supermarkets under the ShopRite banner.  Mandanci has owned and operated a ShopRite store in West Chester for the past 26 years.
The presentation will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. at the Collegeville Borough Hall located at 491 Main Street, Collegeville, and will be followed by a question and answer session.  Refreshments will be served.  For more information, contact Andrea Baptiste or Linda Flederbach at (610) 454-1050 or e-mail

JasonIntern Joins Collegeville Main Street Program

The Collegeville Main Street Program (CMSP) welcomes their first intern, Jason Rinde, who will be assisting with activities until August, when he returns to Penn College in Williamsport, PA, where he is studying Business Management.  Jason has lived in Collegeville since he was 3 years old.  He applied after he heard that the CMSP was looking for help in the office and on the volunteer committees.  Jason will gain first hand experience of how a non-profit organization runs.  Some of the projects he will be contributing to are, developing a database that will track membership and other information, beginning a parking study, producing marketing materials and supporting business recruitment efforts.  He will attend and participate in monthly committee meetings and CEDC Board meetings.  Overall, Jason will help to accomplish various goals that the CMSP wishes to achieve.
If you see Jason, welcome him.
Pam and MeMain Street Manager Attends Statewide Educational Conference

Linda Flederbach (left, with Pam Coleman of Souderton-Telford Main Streets) recently attended Pennsylvania Downtown Center's (PDC) 2009 statewide conference in Johnstown.  This year's conference theme was Community Marketing: Plotting a Course to Your Town's Tomorrow, which focused upon marketing tactics for enhancing community revitalization efforts, whether an organization's budget is large or small.
Linda said, "After attending the Annual Conference, I have returned to Collegeville with fresh ideas that I will be sharing with each working committee and the Board of Directors."
Conference attendees came from a variety of professional backgrounds, including Main Street and Elm Street mangers, representatives of local governments, community planners, engineers, landscape architects, fundraisers and communications and marketing specialists.  Content for the conference included nationally-recognized speakers, over two dozen educational sessions, mobile workshops, and evening networking events.
The Mission of the Collegeville Economic Development Corporation, through which the Main Street Program is run, is to provide direction and overarching framework for advancement and promotion of economic and commercial development, economic revitalization, business, tourism, education and beautification within the Borough of Collegeville.
Footage on the conference can be viewed at WJACTV Coverage of State Conference

The Irish Shop

Dad's big day is almost here, in fact it's this Sunday, June 21st!  No need to panic there is still time, and a great selection of "Irish" gift ideas for you to choose from.  Stop by the Irsih Shop this week and browse their Celtic selections.

Dad will look cool in an Ireland flag design with shamrock lawn/beach chair!  The chair is fully collapsible and comes in a nylon bag for quick storage anywhere.  It also features a built in drink holder in the chair arm.
Large 32" X 64" soft navy blue towels will definitely set Dad apart at the beach or by the pool this summer.  They have two green shamrocks and "Irish" embroidered at the edge of the towel.

Okay we all know Dad is a great grill artist, so you might as well dress him in the appropriate attire.  An Irish themed barbeque set includes the colors of Ireland on an apron, pot holder and oven mitt. It's perfect for the backyard cookouts this season.

From Guinness, The Irish Shop currently has bottle openers which make great gifts for Dad.
There are also Guinness Pint Glass sets  neatly packaged.   Choose from a  Guinness Harp design or a Toucan bird design.  Both contain 2 pint glasses and will certainly delight Dad and add to his barware collection.

Solar Takes Off in PA With Launch of Rebate Program

On Monday, May 18, the PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) began accepting rebate applications for residential and small business solar energy installations. The rebate program, called the PA Sunshine Program, was approved by the legislature last July under Gov. Rendell's $650 million Alternative Energy Funding Act, and allots $100 million for the Commonwealth's new solar initiative.
In the wake of the new program, new solar companies are cropping up throughout our region. PA has an aggressive Renewable Portfolio Standard, with 225 mW of required solar installed by the year 2015, and a developing SREC market. Thousands of kilowatts of PV are expected to be installed in the first year of the program.  One new local solar comapny, SunPower Solar has nearly 30 contracts in queue to receive funding. Once a 3 person operation, SunPower's staff of 20 now looks forward to hiring more installers and office staff, as well as increasing its office facilities to accommodate the business's growth in 2009.
The beginning of the program may present a bumpy ride, as thousands of applications are filed in the first few days and the state grapples with new procedures and a lack of personnel to administer the program. In addition, the solar Thermal (solar water heating) portion of the program will be opening one week late, as a result of problems with the online application. However, PA is the first state in the US to open up a state-wide solar thermal program and its energy policy is quite progressive, ensuring a bright future for solar in PA. SunPower Solar has worked with legislators, the Mid-Atlantic Solar Energy Industries Association (MSEIA), and others throughout this program's development. As Ron Celentano, VP for MSEIA, states, "MSEIA worked very hard to help shape the Sunshine program design. Although not all of our recommendations were included, we are very happy to see this program finally launch."
In addition to the PA Sunshine Program, several other initiatives are opening in the state to fund solar energy projects. The Commonwealth Financing Authority has also opened its Solar Energy Program, for larger solar projects as well as R&D and manufacturing. Details on this program can be found at www.newpa.com. The DEP is also accepting applications for Pennsylvania Economic Development Authority (PEDA) grants, which can be used for large-scale, innovative solar projects, and hopes to open a new program for nonprofits and municipalities called PA Conservation Works! in mid-June. Information on these, as well as the PA Sunshine Program can be found at www.depweb.state.pa.us/energindependent .
