COHA Partners with Assembly Member Gatto to Introduce Landowner Hunting Rights Legislation

COHA is pleased to join forces with Assembly Member Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles) to introduce AB 606, state legislation which would ensure that private landowners who enroll their property into a conservation easement or wildlife habitat conservation program - such as the California Waterfowl Habitat Program or the Landowner Incentive Program - can continue to hunt and fish on their land.  For more information and to view the press release, CLICK HERE.

Sutter County Approves Levee Hunting Ban

The Sutter County Board of Supervisors recently approved an amended ordinance that would prohibit the discharge of firearms on portions of the County's levee system adjacent to the Feather River.  This includes parts of the Department of Fish and Game's Sutter Bypass Wildlife Area (see http://www.dfg.ca.gov/lands/wa/region2/sutterbypass.html).  Because of the new restrictions, existing hunting opportunities for dove, pheasant, rabbit and waterfowl will effectively be prohibited on the levees within the Wildlife Area.

COHA has contacted Sutter County Supervisors arguing that because hunting is a state, not locally, regulated activity their concerns should be brought to the State Fish and Game Commission.  COHA has also provided the Vice Chair of the Board with a State Attorney General Opinion in support of our position.  Early next week, COHA staff is scheduled to meet with Sutter County decision makers to further discuss the issue.  Local hunters who would like to know more about, or weigh in on the levee hunting ban can contact the Sutter County Board of Supervisors or attend their next meeting on Tuesday, March 15th at 7:00 pm in Yuba City.  For specific meeting location and the Supervisors' contact information, please visit:  http://www.co.sutter.ca.us/doc/government/bos/bos_home
