Governor Brown Proposes Deep Cuts in
FY 2011/2012 State Budget
On January 10, 2011, California Governor Jerry Brown issued his proposed State Budget package for FY 2011/2012. As expected, in order to close the massive $25.5 billion dollar budget shortfall, Governor Brown's proposal slashes government spending across the board - including an 18% cut in overall budget for the Department of Fish and Game (DFG). Even though DFG is facing a substantial bottom-line budget reduction, COHA is pleased to note that important land management, wildlife habitat conservation and hunting programs are actually slated to see an increase over FY 2010/2011 funding levels.
During a meeting late last year, Brown agreed with COHA and our member organizations regarding the importance of increasing funding levels for the Department's critical core wildlife and hunting programs. With these programs now positioned for an increase, COHA staff will actively work to maintain and protect their funding as the Governor's budget works its way through the legislative process over the coming months.
