COHA ANNOUNCES LIST OF ENDORSED CANDIDATES FOR STATE LEGISLATIVE RACES

With the November 2nd statewide election around the corner, the California Outdoor Heritage Alliance (COHA) has formally endorsed a slate of candidates for both the California State Senate and California State Assembly.  These COHA endorsed candidates have demonstrated their strong support of California's hunting Vote buttoncommunity by supporting pro-hunting/conservation legislation and/or helping COHA to defeat legislation which would have negatively impacted our outdoor heritage.  Many of the COHA endorsed candidates are also current members of the California Legislature Outdoor Sporting Caucus (Caucus Website), which helps to educate elected officials and other policy makers about hunting, fishing, shooting and conservation issues. Please note that COHA has only made endorsements in those races where one of the candidates has a proven track record of supporting hunting, and/or wildlife conservation.

COHA PAC - Help Elect Pro-Conservation Candidates

In order to ensure that COHA endorsed candidates are successful in their elections and to maximize our effectiveness at the State Legislature in defending your hunting rights and promoting wildlife conservation, COHA needs your help to adequately fund its Political Action Committee (PAC).  capitol state

COHA PAC contributes funds to political candidates and elected officials of California state office that support the traditional outdoor legacy of California's outdoorsmen and women. Each election cycle, COHA PAC contributes funds to the campaigns of both Republicans and Democrats that have a proven track record of supporting our interests.  This effort has helped COHA to pass several important pieces of pro-hunting legislation (including COHA sponsored SB 1058, AB 1254 and AB 1423), and to defeat numerous bills that would have negatively impacted our outdoor heritage.

Proposition 21 - Funding for DFG Land Management

COHA is pleased to endorse Proposition 21, the "State Parks and Wildlife Conservation Trust Fund Act of 2010".  Proposition 21, which will appear on the DFGNovember 2nd statewide ballot, if passed, will create a new, long-term funding stream for parks and conservation purposes. In additional to COHA, the measure is supported by California Waterfowl, the California Game Wardens Association and other conservation organizations.  Funding would be generated through an additional $18 vehicle license fee.

While much of the funding that would be provided via Proposition 21 is targeted for California State Parks, the measure would increase the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) annual budget by nearly 10% by providing roughly $34 million annually to fund wildlife management activities on DFG Wildlife Areas and Ecological Reserves.

Currently, federal taxes on hunting and fishing equipment, as well as user fees imposed on outdoorsmen and women, fund much of the management activities for State Wildlife Areas that provide important public hunting opportunities and key habitats for numerous game and non-game species. An additional, stable source of funding is critically needed for DFG lands due to escalating management costs that are overtaking limited budgets. These costs include staff cost, water delivery, mosquito abatement, noxious weed control, land management equipment and supplies. The roughly $34 million provided annually by Proposition 21 would help to improve habitat conditions on these important lands, and also reduce the need for DFG to redirect hunting and fishing-related funds for unrelated purposes.
