Two COHA Bills Reach Governor's Desk

COHA Members Asked to Take Action

The California Outdoor Heritage Alliance (COHA) is pleased to announce that two COHA sponsored pro-hunting bills have passed out of the State Legislature and are now on the Governor's desk for his consideration.  COHA is asking all of its members to take action by submitting a support letter to the Governor for each of the following bills.

AB 1423 (T. Berryhill) - On September 10, 2009, the California State Assembly passed AB 1423 and sent the COHA sponsored measure to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for his signature.  If signed into law, AB 1423 would increase penalties for hunter harassment, help secure federal funds for California's "public access to private lands" hunting program (SHARE Program) and limit commercial hunting club fees.  If approved, AB 1423 will substantially promote hunting opportunity in our state, and help protect hunters while in the field.

SB 589 (Harman) - COHA-sponsored bill, SB 589, has also recently been sent to the Governor's desk for his consideration.  The bill would protect hunting license tag and stamp monies from being redirected by the state for non-game or non-hunting purposes by providing much-needed accountability and transparency of the use of these hunter-generated funds.  SB 589 affects all deer, elk, antelope, wild pig, bighorn sheep and bear tag revenues and all upland game stamp funds -- whose annual combined revenues total approximately $9.5 million.

Initial Funding Approved for Tulare Basin Easements

On Wednesday, September 9th, the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission (MBCC) approved funding to acquire the first three federal conservation easements which will protect 1,042 acres of private habitats in the newly approved Tulare Basin Wildlife Management Area (TBWMA) in California's southern San Joaquin Valley.  COHA was pleased to play a major role in approval of the TBWMA in order to expedite efforts to preserve and restore critical wetland habitats in the region which has suffered the greatest percentage loss of this habitat type in North America.  For more information and to view the press release visit our website.
