COHA Pushes for Rep. Thompson Appointment to DOI Secretary
The California Outdoor Heritage Alliance (COHA) has been diligently working with the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation, California Waterfowl Association and our many other state and national partners in an attempt to secure the appointment of close ally and friend, Congressman Mike Thompson (D-1st/CA) to the position of Secretary of Interior - the post which oversees all federal resource related agencies, including the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. As of mid December, Representative Thompson appeared to be one of the two favored candidates for this post, with the other being Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva (D-7th/AZ). Although both Democrats, the two representatives appear to strongly differ on issues of importance to the hunting and conservation community. COHA Seeks More Public Hunting Opportunities in the Central Valley The California Outdoor Heritage Alliance recently provided comments on the CA State Parks' draft "Central Valley Vision Implementation Plan" in an effort to encourage the Agency to open additional State Recreation Areas (SRAs) to hunting and facilitate greater hunter access to public lands and waters. While not a well known provider of hunting opportunities, under state law CA State Parks may allow hunting on SRAs and its undesignated lands. In addition, it may permit hunters to launch boats from State Parks' properties to access nearby lands and waters. For a copy of our comments, please go to: COHA's website.
In particular, COHA is urging CA State Parks to include a hunting program for its Sutter Buttes property, which provides habitat for wild pigs and deer but is currently off-limits to public use. In addition, CA State Parks is proposing to acquire a portion of the Tejon Ranch in Kern County, one of the premier big game hunting venues in California. Should that occur, COHA is strongly urging that the current hunt program be maintained. Public comments are due by Monday, December 15th. For more information, contact CA State Parks at centralvalleyvision@parks.ca.gov or at (916) 653-9901.
