2008 Elections Outcome

Democratic Majority Grows

The 2008 State and Federal November elections have strengthened the Democrats hold on nearly all levels of government.  Democrats not only captured the White House, but also won several seats in Congress.  Additionally, California saw Democrats expand their control of the State Legislature by picking up at least two seats in the Assembly and possibly one more in the Senate.  With several races still too close to call, due to the record number of absentee ballots yet to be counted, it is possible that Democrats may even win additional seats.

Statewide Ballot Initiatives:  A Mixed Bag
Last Tuesday, voters considered two separate ballot measures that will have implications for California's hunting community over the long-term.  On the negative side, the ease with which Proposition 2: "Standards for Confining Farm Animals" passed (an initiative sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States) will likely embolden animal rights activists to push more ballot measures targeting hunting and other animal-dependent activities they deem cruel and inhumane.  Conversely, the apparent victory of Proposition 11: "Redistricting" will help ensure more politically moderate office holders are elected to the State Legislature, while also achieving a more equitable balance of Republicans and Democrats at the State Capitol.
