Bothell City Council Votes to Move Forward with Annexation
An additional 27,000 people could be welcomed to Bothell within two years

CityLogoBW

On April 6, Bothell City Council voted unanimously to move forward with the next steps in the potential annexation of 11 unincorporated areas with a combined population of 27,000.

Over the past year, the City of Bothell has been conducting research and holding public hearings and open houses related to the potential annexation of areas surrounding Bothell in King and Snohomish Counties.  Both counties' planning policies recognize Bothell as the most appropriate provider of urban services to these areas.

The City Council's vote endorses holding an annexation election in the largest area - 5.6 square miles of unincorporated Snohomish County territory having a population of 22,000 - and annexing the other 10 areas, all but one in King County, by methods that do not involve elections.

Bothell's population is currently 33,505, according to the 2010 federal census.  Annexation would add approximately 27,000 residents to Bothell. That would make Bothell the 15th largest city in the state in terms of population.  Currently, it is ranked at number 32.

Celebrate Earth Day on Campus
Thursday, April 21
11:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Earth Day

Students at the University of Washington Bothell and Cascadia Community College are inviting the public to join them on April 21 to observe Earth Day.

The daylong event was created by a group of students representing Cascadia and UW Bothell. Both schools place a significant emphasis on environmental studies and sustainability, and share a campus situated next to one of the region's most successful wetlands restoration projects.

Between the hours of 11 AM and 4 PM, visitors will be able to volunteer to remove invasive plant species from the wetlands, check out displays of electric and hybrid vehicles, meet with representatives from several environmentally focused community organizations, or hear a variety of speakers discussing Earth Day related topics. Additionally, one day's worth of garbage will be on display to demonstrate the amount of waste generated by the campus, and to show what can be composted or recycled.

The event will also include food, poetry, and movies. For a complete list of activities, visit www.uwb.edu or

King County Looking for Best Workplaces for Recycling and Waste Reduction
Submission Deadline: May 27

Recycle

Since 2007, King County's Best Workplaces for Recycling and Waste Reduction list has recognized the accomplishments of our local small and large businesses in conserving natural resources, and in reducing the amount of trash that goes into our regional landfill.

As the program enters its fifth year, King County is announcing a new feature of the program - the Best Workplaces Honor Roll. Businesses that have been on the list for the past four years and meet the 2011 required criteria will be eligible for this top recognition. This business honor roll will serve to inspire other companies about reducing waste through simple changes to their daily operations.

All businesses operating in King County outside the City of Seattle are eligible to apply, and the list will be announced in June.

The online application is available at http://your.kingcounty.gov/solidwaste/garbage-recycling/apply-best-workplaces.asp. More information is available by calling May at 206.296.4353, or emailing karen.may@kingcounty.gov.
