Dear BISD staff:
Recently, two BISD students hacked into a district server and accessed three files, one of which contained sensitive personal student information from the 2008-09 school year. There was also an employee database on the same server; however, it did not contain sensitive personal employee information. These files have been removed from the server.
The students involved in the security breach will be appropriately disciplined according to district policy, and local law enforcement is investigating to determine if criminal charges will be filed.
At this time, BISD does not believe the files were ever used. However, the district is mailing a letter to every student impacted by this breach.
If you receive questions from parents, please let them know that those impacted by the breach will receive written communication from the district concerning this incident. However, if they feel the need to confirm this with the district, they may call 817-547-5792 beginning Tuesday, Sept. 6. The help desk will be open from 8-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6 through Friday, Sept. 16. The help desk will only be able to confirm whether or not a student's information is part of the breach.
Darrell G. Brown, Ph.D.
