Illinois Arts & Humanities Month Starts Today!

Illinois Arts & Humanities (AH!) Month Logo/ID

This October, for the first time ever, the Illinois Arts Council and the Illinois Humanities Council are pleased to present Illinois Arts & Humanities (A+H=AH!) Month, a statewide celebration encouraging all Illinoisans to establish, deepen, and expand our relationships with the arts and humanities.

According to Wikipedia, AH! may be: "An onomatopoeia for the sound made when one realizes something." This is a sound that people with experience in the arts and humanities have all come to know well. Another thing we know very well is the great power these realizations hold in shaping our ability to understand each other and function as productive and passionate members of a civil society.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! The drive during Illinois AH! Month this October is to create and share more of these AH! moments with people and communities statewide. No matter your age, your financial situation, your culture, your education, or your zipcode, new realizations are always possible when exploring or expressing the human condition through the arts and humanities. Below you will find some ideas and resources geared toward advancing that mission statewide:

See below and visit the Illinois AH! Month section of the Illinois Arts Council website for more information. Together, we can make the arts and humanities a visible and vital part of everyone's everyday lives in the Land of Lincoln!

Make time this month to attend or host an Illinois AH! Month event.

Illinois AH! Month Events Calendar: The vast Illinois AH! Month calendar of events is live online at www.prairie.org/ah, listing pages and pages of arts and humanities activities for all tastes. Search by day or zip code to find hundreds upon hundreds of AH! worthy events happening statewide this October. If you would like to be listed on this calendar, it's not too late! Simply fill out and submit this online form. Questions about calendar submissions? Contact Maggie Berndt at the Illinois Humanities Council by e-mail or at 312.422.5585 x239.

Creative Conversations: Attend or host a Creative Conversation in your community this October and connect with others who want to make a difference for the arts in your community. Creative Conversations are local gatherings of emerging leaders in communities across the country and are part of a grassroots movement to elevate the profile of arts in America during National Arts & Humanities Month every October. Started in 2004, some of these local convenings have grown into cohesive, organized emerging leader networks. This local tool empowers emerging leaders to take a leadership role in their own community by both designing programming and galvanizing their peers to connect professionally. To host a Creative Conversation in your community, review the Creative Conversation Toolkit online and contact Scarlett Swerdlow at the Illinois Arts Alliance.

BeInspiredThe "Illinois AH! Month" Challenge

Who's got what it takes to make the most creative, fruitful, and "AH! inspiring" partnership this October? YOU?

It has been a true pleasure for the Illinois Arts Council and Illinois Humanities Council to work together this year in creating the first ever Illinois AH! Month. Not to toot our own horns too much, but we've been so impressed by what's come of the combined forces that we're issuing a special challenge to the field: Who will go farthest to reach beyond the "usual suspects" by engaging local businesses, civic leaders, media outlets, schools, senior centers, park districts, and especially the underserved populations in your communities to participate in, learn from, and enjoy firsthand the "AH! inspiring" power of arts and humanities? Through collaboration, we can grow stronger and better connected to each other and the broader community - and use this new strength and these new connections to advance a fertile creative landscape for Illinois.

The Rules: Eligible partnerships and collaborations are those efforts exemplifying the spirit of AH! which either begin, expand, deepen, or see results in the month of October. Entry for consideration opens October 1st and closes November 1st. Send links or stories or whatever form your documentation takes to Alex A.G. Shapiro at the Illinois Arts Council. Respect and honor will be heaped upon every submission, and the top ten will have the opportunity to be featured in future Illinois Arts Council or Illinois Humanities Council publications.
