CIPS Responds to Bill C-30
|
The members of the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS) -- Canada's Association for Information Technology (IT) Practitioners, are concerned about the proposed legislative changes in Bill C-30. CIPS is a national organization with provincial associations, which are the legislated registration organization for the IT professional.
As IT professionals, we have the knowledge and understanding (expertise) of how communications and information on computer and related systems can be accessed and how these systems can and will be used in criminal acts and fraud. We also recognize that we, as a nation, must address and meet the challenge of people with the motivation and capability to use information and communications technology for criminal and terrorism acts.
Our primary concern with the proposed legislation is in relationship to the privacy of personal information. The CIPS Code of Ethics requires our members to:
- protect the public interest and discharge with integrity all duties and services owed to the public, CIPS members, other IT professionals and clients.
- treat the public interest as paramount and that it must prevail when there is conflict with other obligations
CIPS urges the Government of Canada to:
- prohibit access to personal information, related records/data, content, communications or records of internet use without the safeguard of a warrant;
- not offer legal immunity to companies that disclose personal information without a warrant. We believe this would encourage inappropriate 'fishing expeditions;'
- ensure personal data is not used for purposes other than security and law enforcement;

CIPS Volunteer of the Month
|
Jason Janes, I.S.P., ITCP, PMP, MCTIP
What type of Involvement have you had with CIPS?
"In 2008 after returning home to Newfoundland and Labrador, I wanted to become reacquainted with the IT industry here so I began the search for a like-minded group of technology professionals. I very quickly found the CIPS NL group and joined them for a lunch and learn session. I liked what I saw and decided to volunteer. In a very short time, I earned the respect of the group and was nominated to the position of Vice President and during the 2009 AGM, I became President. I held that position for 2 years and I am currently the past president.
My goal is to raise awareness for the importance of professionalism in the IT industry. Each and every day, I meet with individuals and organizations that either provide or consume IT services and reinforce the importance of professionalism in their organizations. It sometimes feels like an up hill battle but it is definitely a worthwhile effort."

Successful CIPS NL Women in IT Conference Recap
|
On Thursday, May 3rd, 2012 the annual CIPS NL Women in IT (WIT) Conference was held in Newfoundland & Labrador. For the first time, the event went beyond the single site in St. John's, and a smaller satellite event was simultaneously held on the province's west coast in Corner Brook.
As in previous years, the WIT conference was held at the campus of the College of the North Atlantic (CNA) in St. John's on Prince Philip Drive. The Corner Brook event was held at the College's west coast campus on O'Connell Drive. In total,
over 350 girls spent the day learning about the exciting careers of women at the forefront of the province's advanced technology sector. Speakers interspersed talks about reasonable use of social media and the career adventures of a senior IT business analyst with hula hoop lessons and an art show. The province's Chief Information Officer, Ms. Ellen MacDonald, delivered a keynote address live in St. John's and simulcast to the audience in Corner Brook. In her address Ms. MacDonald talked of the wonderful opportunities a career in IT has given to her, and urged the girls to consider it too. [Click Here to Read More] Also See:

|
via Microsoft TechNet
I'm Ruth Morton, Technology Advisor with Microsoft Canada and I work on a team that is tasked with helping you, Canadian IT folk, by providing resources, answering questions and generally trying to set you up for success with Microsoft-based solutions.
One of the latest trends transforming how IT services are provided is Private Cloud infrastructure. What Is A Private Cloud? Basically it's a back end infrastructure built so that it has some of the characteristics of a public cloud infrastructure such as pooled resources, self-service, elasticity, and being usage based, but is dedicated for a particular organization. Its Cloud dedicated to you.
There are some great resources available as you start investigating Private Cloud:
- Read the blog posts based on a whitepaper comparison of Private Cloud solutions from Microsoft and VMware.
- Take an assessment to see how ready you and your organization are for Private Cloud
- Download a free evaluation of the Microsoft Private Cloud software: Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 + System Center 2012
