ALL HISTORIC SITES
May 31-September 9, 2010
Active military personnel and their families are invited to enjoy free admission (with proper identification) at all Texas Historical Commission historic sites that are open to the public, as part of the National Endowment for the Arts' Blue Star Museums program. The program runs from Memorial Day (May 31) through Labor Day (Sept. 6) with more than 700 participating museums and historic sites across the U.S.
 
ALL STATE HISTORIC SITE FORTS
All state historic forts recognize the official Buffalo Soldier Heritage Month and honor the contribution that Buffalo Soldiers made to Texas history throughout the year. 
 
FORT GRIFFIN STATE HISTORIC SITE

The tales of the old (and new) West, as well as characters of rural America from times gone by, are presented in poetic form by Doyle (Doc) Wood on the Saturday night of Independence Day weekend. Doc has been performing at Copper Breaks State Park and Fort Richardson State Park for the past couple of years, and now at Fort Griffin. His poetry ranges from the hilarious to the poignant, with tales of situations, characters, and animals. Much of Doc's poetry comes from his own writing, including from his book, Color Chips.

Summer Class: Building with Dirt!

Come get dirty as we make adobe bricks like those in the Magoffin Home. Learn the tools and techniques of basic adobe construction and take home your own mini adobe building. Wear clothing and sturdy shoes that can get muddy. Reservations are required; please call 915.533.5147.

CASA NAVARRO STATE HISTORIC SITE
Annual Whitewashing of Casa Navarro
July 17-August 15, 2010
Casa Navarro staff roll up their sleeves for the annual whitewashing of Casa Navarro's adobe walls, using an old recipe consisting of lime paste and cactus juice. Start and end dates are approximate. For more details, call 210.226.4801.

American Indian Scouts Month
August 1-31, 2010
All state historic forts recognize the official American Indian Scouts Month and honor the contribution that Indian Scouts made to Texas history throughout the year. Also, be sure to check out the new exhibit at Fort Griffin that features the Tonkawa Scouts who served at the fort.

SABINE PASS STATE HISTORIC SITE
Dick Dowling Days 2010
September 11-12, 2010
Sabine Pass Battleground invites the public for two days of living history at the 2010 Dick Dowling Days. Event to include: living history demonstrations, memorial ceremony hosted by the Jefferson County Historical Commission, battle reenactment, historic scenarios performed throughout the two days, accurate reproductions of clothing and uniforms, authentic demonstrations of equipment and weapons, tours of Confederate and Union Army encampments, food and vendors.
