President's Letter

Rem Houser

Dear CORTA members,

First, I would like to welcome our new CORTA board members, Natasha Arora, Wanda Dryman, Bernard Francis, Greg Gatti, Scott Laymon, DeAnne Martin, and Brian Worstell. Thank you so much for volunteering your time!

On the CORTA business front, we have filled many of our committee positions and I am very grateful to all who have stepped forward to serve. There are always lots of jobs to be done and if you have any interest in becoming more involved in CORTA, we'd love to have you. If you would like to serve on one of the CORTA committees, please contact us at the CORTA office at corta@corta.org

The response to our new website has been great. This is a great way to advertise your business and let your fellow tennis players know what you do. The site averages around 10,000 hits per day and the rates are very reasonable. If you are interested in knowing more about it, contact Fran Carpenter at fran@corta.org. All the revenues from ad sales go back into CORTA programs.

Deby Caldwell and the CORTA Teen Council have hit a home run with the Adopt A Unit program. This is a national USTA initiative that our juniors got behind to make happen. Thank you to all our CORTA members who donated goods for our men and women deployed from Fort Benning to Afghanistan.

This year marks the 60th birthday for CORTA. We were born in 1952, and our leader Judy has been at the helm for 18 of those 60 years. Thank you Judy for all you do!

And congratulations to the CORTA Board and staff for maintaining Elite status following the annual CTA review with USTA Georgia. Only two of the 32 community tennis associations in Georgia achieved this status for 2012.

Now that the sun is shining, the temperatures are rising and a breeze is blowing we can come out and enjoy playing our favorite sport. What better way is there than to play the Banana Tournaments. The Senior Banana was a great success and great fun and the Adult and Junior Banana's are on the horizon. In my mind, that's about as good as it gets!

Finally, I want to say thank you to all CORTA members and CORTA staff for helping to get 2012 off to a great start! Let's make it a great year for tennis.

ADOPT A UNIT

We really appreciate all the support we received from CORTA Jr. Teen Council and all the CORTA members who were so generous with donations to the Adopt A Unit program. Twenty-eight boxes of individual care packages have begun to arrive in Afghanistan.  Each individual soldier will receive one of our "Just Crush It" t-shirts in addition to the many personal items that were requested.

Many thanks go out to our Senior and Adult League Teams who gave so generously and many who made donations anonymously to this great project. In addition, several local businesses got wind of what we were doing and stepped up to take part in the effort. These include:

By Invitation - Frank & Julie Brown

Caldwell Animal Hospital - Dr. H.G. Caldwell

Dr. Robert Carpenter

Adam Centerbar

Columbus Fire & Safety - Tommy Williams

CORTA Board Members

Susan and Ramon Davis

PDS Inc. - Bruce McDonnell

Dr. Richard Straus
Two Men & A Truck - Will Dillon

LTC Thomas Lesnieski wrote, "We will be sure to send you photos of our Soldiers with the packages, wearing the t-shirts, as well as playing 'combat tennis.'  TF Hydra appreciates your thoughtful gesture towards our Soldiers.  You and your organization members are why we do what we do.  To be appreciated makes it all worth the effort, sacrifice and time away from our families."

This letter from tennis players Bernie and Judy Ostervold sums up the reason we embraced the Adopt A Unit program:

"I am extra appreciative of this project. Our son, LTC Lars Ostervold, Jr., brigade engineer, is on his way back from Afghanistan, with the last of the 3,000 Oklahoma National Guard Thunderbirds. The 'jobs' these men have chosen is so important to the freedoms we have. Plus, they are also ambassadors for all of us. These Georgia troops are just beginning their time in this dangerous country, and we pray for their safety. We just wanted to give a personal "Thank You" to the kids for their so special project!"

We can hardly wait to hear from the soldiers we adopted! We will keep you posted when we hear from them.

CORTA Membership Appreciation Party

USTA Play Day
By Deby Caldwell
CORTA sponsored a USTA Tennis Play Day on March 17th at Lakebottom Park from 9:00 to 12:00 pm. This event was mainly to introduce 10 and under kids to competition in a low-pressure, non-elimination setting where results are not documented and everyone has a sense of achievement. The emphasis of a Play Day is on participation, effort, and sportsmanship. In this special event, we had about 15 kids and 9 volunteers. We talked to the them about what is important for them which is playing fair, trying hard, meeting new friends and having FUN. That is what this whole day was about: FUN FUN FUN !!!!!

Tournament Season Has Begun!

Tournament Season has officially begun for the 2012 year and we are off to a great start.  We hosted the National Open Boys 12's on February 25-27 at Cooper Creek Tennis Center.  We had some of the top players in the nation participate in this tournament.  Players came from as far as Puerto Rico and New York.  On Friday evening, we hosted a player party and raffle at the host hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn. On Saturday, the players began play at 9:00 AM on all courts surrounding the two story clubhouse for optimal viewing. All competitors played 3 matches during this long first day. Play continued until Monday afternoon.  We were thankful for the beautiful weather, great sponsors, volunteers, officials and court sweepers.  Our sponsors for the tournament were:  Columbus Sports Council, Columbus Parks and Recreation Department, CiCi's Pizza, and the Hilton Garden Inn. April will be full of tournament play.  We hosted the Bullfrog Southern Section Designated Boys and Girls 16's and 18's March 30-April 2 at Cooper Creek Tennis Center and the Country Club of Columbus.  We had over 250 players that came in from all over the Southeast for this tournament. The tournament had a slow start with the rain that came right before our Friday matches. The rain stuck around throughout Saturday morning. We finally got started Saturday at 3pm. We had to cancel the doubles but we did get all the singles in. Local player Christian Garay made it to the finals of the 18s division. Congrats to Christian!!! Our sponsors for the tournament were: Columbus Sports Council, Columbus Parks and Recreation Department, CiCi's Pizza, and  Hyatt Place.
