President's Letter
|
Dear CORTA members,
One morning I saw a mother feeding tennis balls to her two young children. She told me she had found an outdoor physical activity that they could all enjoy together. Tennis is such a special sport, one that transcends ages and gender. The summer USTA Mixed and Combo Doubles Leagues are wonderful examples of spouses, parents and their adult children playing together as teammates. Everyday at Cooper Creek Tennis Center, you can witness small children, barely able to hold a racquet, learning to play. Turn to another court and seniors are engaged in a lively, physically exhausting match. It is inspiring that tennis routinely draws in players of all ages and abilities.
CORTA provides recreational programs to meet the needs of local players from novice to expert. You, the Player Community, continue to respond enthusiastically to our adult leagues, junior and community programs. Your suggestions, comments and feedback drive these programs. It is a pleasure to have tennis represented so strongly in Columbus. It enhances the quality of life in our community, both physically and socially.
The Board and Staff of CORTA continue to work with Columbus Parks and Recreation. We are hopeful that you will see major improvements at the Cooper Creek Tennis Center in the coming months. The City of Columbus is now accepting bids to resurface the courts. We are also urging the purchase of drag brooms and brushes to make these items readily available for players to sweep and line courts after matches. All of us that play at our city's main tennis facility are hopeful that this bidding process will proceed quickly and result in a safer, high quality playing experience. It is vital to CORTA that we take good care of this tennis facility so multi generations can continue to bond in a healthy, fun environment that is available for everyone.
The young mother I met took me back to the time when my children were learning to play tennis. Now, almost twenty years later, my daughters are still playing tennis. I am scheduled to play tonight in a combo match with one of them. I am no longer her teacher, but her (lower ranked) partner. Thank you CORTA for the opportunities you have given us to play together!
See you on the courts!
