 President's Letter
Nancy Prescott 2010
What a beautiful spring day it is today, especially after our cold and very wet winter.  I am grateful for this sunny day and know that many tennis matches will be played across our region today.  It seems that we are in a state of renewal and rebirth with sunny, 70 degree weather.

CORTA continues to renew itself as well. I am pleased to report that the City of Columbus will continue to manage Cooper Creek Tennis Center. You may wonder why I am pleased. The reason is simple. The City auditor conducted a review of Cooper Creek Tennis Center.  The City is working to address items that he identified... many of which were the same conerns that were voiced by the CORTA membership.  CORTA's only interest in managing Cooper Creek was to improve the facility. We are thrilled that the City is committed to ensuring that players experience tennis at its best! Assistant Parks & Recreation Director Cammy Currie has been appointed to work as a liaison with CORTA. Cammy has been meeting regularly with Judy Pearce, CORTA Executive Director, and they have been making steady progress for several weeks now.  We need to continue to make suggestions and work together for the benefit of tennis in Columbus. We are eagerly anticipating the needed upgrades to the tennis center. I am optimistic that both the City of Columbus and our CORTA membership will be happy with the changes.
A very special thank you to the "anonymous" donor who generously purchased the new green chairs for courts 1-20 at Cooper Creek Tennis Center.
I am also pleased that CORTA has begun working closer with the tennis professionals that teach at Cooper Creek Tennis Center. We recently hosted a lunch and received candid and useful input from this group of professionals.  We look forward to working with them more closely to improve tennis programs hosted by CORTA. I am very grateful to each of the pros who gave of their time to attend this luncheon.

The focus of your board continues to be to offer programs to our eager tennis community and creatively work with the City of Columbus to upgrade the courts and service at the Cooper Creek Tennis center.

I hope to see you on the courts!

Tournament News

USTA National Open Boys' 12s
CORTA and Columbus Parks and Recreation hosted the USTA National Open Boys 12s tournament on February 13-17, 2010.  Despite the snow and cold temperatures, it was a huge success with sixty-four players from across the country.  The player party was held at the Courtyard Marriott.  CORTA volunteer, Lynn Reis and her family, hosted an awesome party!  The players enjoyed pizza and home baked desserts prepared by Lynn and her daughter, Annslee.  A raffle for prizes was held while players enjoyed fellowship with other players over dinner.  Several rounds of the tournament had to be played on the hard courts because Cooper Creek Courts were frozen.  Thanks to CSU and the Cliff Farrar Tennis facility for their willingness to share their courts so that the tournament could go on.  Local players, Preston Morpeth, Bense Medders, J.T. Powell and Kristopher Hill participated in the tournament.   This tournament could not have been possible without the help of the following CORTA volunteers:  the Illges Family, Adam Centerbar, Cissy Sanders, Russ Hagberg, Susan Markovich, Patty Lin, Max Patrick, Pattee Spenard, Margaret Love, Cathy Pitts, the Gordon Family and the Reis Family.  Also, thank you to our Tournament Referee and Deputy Referee, Ken Smith and Nita Perry, and their officials who ensured that we had fair play.  The court sweepers worked hard to ensure that each match was played on a freshly swept court.  Thank you to the Columbus Sports Council for their sponsorship!  Thank you to Donna Comer of Travels by Donna for the donation of round tables and seating for the Boys' 12s National Tournament.  The boys and their parents really enjoyed a place to relax between matches as well as a place to enjoy their lunches prepared by Butterfingers Crazy Chicken.

Snow at Cooper Creek delayed the start of National Boys 12s!

CORTA Junior Championships
CORTA and the Columbus Parks and Recreation also hosted the CORTA Junior Championships on March 27-28, 2010. We had over 105 junior players participate in this singles and doubles tournament. Thank you to Columbus Regional Healthcare System and the Columbus Sports Council for your sponsorship. Thank you to CORTA volunteers, Adam Centerbar, Russ Hagberg, Walter Trussell, Walt Trussell, and the Illges Family!
