Tournament News
by Aline Trussell | USTA National Open Boys' 12s CORTA and Columbus Parks and Recreation hosted the USTA National Open Boys 12s tournament on February 13-17, 2010. Despite the snow and cold temperatures, it was a huge success with sixty-four players from across the country. The player party was held at the Courtyard Marriott. CORTA volunteer, Lynn Reis and her family, hosted an awesome party! The players enjoyed pizza and home baked desserts prepared by Lynn and her daughter, Annslee. A raffle for prizes was held while players enjoyed fellowship with other players over dinner. Several rounds of the tournament had to be played on the hard courts because Cooper Creek Courts were frozen. Thanks to CSU and the Cliff Farrar Tennis facility for their willingness to share their courts so that the tournament could go on. Local players, Preston Morpeth, Bense Medders, J.T. Powell and Kristopher Hill participated in the tournament. This tournament could not have been possible without the help of the following CORTA volunteers: the Illges Family, Adam Centerbar, Cissy Sanders, Russ Hagberg, Susan Markovich, Patty Lin, Max Patrick, Pattee Spenard, Margaret Love, Cathy Pitts, the Gordon Family and the Reis Family. Also, thank you to our Tournament Referee and Deputy Referee, Ken Smith and Nita Perry, and their officials who ensured that we had fair play. The court sweepers worked hard to ensure that each match was played on a freshly swept court. Thank you to the Columbus Sports Council for their sponsorship! Thank you to Donna Comer of Travels by Donna for the donation of round tables and seating for the Boys' 12s National Tournament. The boys and their parents really enjoyed a place to relax between matches as well as a place to enjoy their lunches prepared by Butterfingers Crazy Chicken.
Snow at Cooper Creek delayed the start of National Boys 12s! |
