Greetings!

Did you know?

April is National Limb Loss Awareness Month. Make your voice heard! Contact the President today!

Each year 185,000 amputations occur in the United States, largely due to vascular disease, and 60 percent are preventable. Over 2 million Americans currently live with limb loss, and that number is expected to double by 2050 unless a major public awareness campaign and key preventive initiatives are launched. The Amputee Coalition is on a mission to increase awareness about those living with limb loss and limb loss prevention. The Amputee Coalition has asked President Obama to declare April as Limb Loss Awareness Month.

"Limb loss is not uncommon and it affects every generation, from young to old, and people from all walks of life. Statistics show that those at greatest risk are people who have diabetes or a vascular impairment such as peripheral arterial disease."With over 28 million Americans living with diabetes, and with diabetes and peripheral vascular disease being the leading causes of limb loss, this is a significant public health concern," said Kendra Calhoun, Amputee Coalition president and CEO "If you are a smoker, your risk of limb loss increases 25 times. African Americans are four times more likely to lose a limb than non-Hispanic white people."

C-Leg Clinic April 20-21, 2012

We are extremely excited to offer our latest C-Leg clinic! The event is open to any C-Leg users or medical professionals who wish to learn the most up to date advanced training techniques for the C-Leg. This is a great opportunity to work on "real world" ambulatory skills outside a therapeutic setting.

The clinic will be given by Robert Jordan, a professional C-Leg and Genium patient with Otto Bock and long time wearer of microprocessor technology.

Mark your calendars for 2 days, Friday, April 20 in our office, and Saturday, April 21 at A.D. Doug Barnes Park. The clinic will include active participation in outdoor skills, techniques to improve functional level and tips to maximize the use of microprocessor technology everyday. Breakfast and lunch will be provided both days. Attendance both days is not required, but highly recommended. Please specify when registering.

***To register, please contact our office at 305-598-9968 or e-mail us. We will also have a demo C-Leg to "test drive" for anyone interested in experiencing the difference microprocessor technology can make in comfort and function.

ORTHO PRO: IN THE COMMUNITY

The 25TH University of Miami Hurricane Challenge: Ortho Pro was a featured sponsor of this wonderful event that raises public awareness of the everyday challenges faced by individuals with physical disabilities. Up to 500 children from Miami-Dade County Public schools were provided a fun-filled day of activities. It was great to see several of our patients in attendance!

ORTHO PRO: IN ATTENDANCE

Miami Project To Cure Paralysis:

Ortho Pro was invited to the 2nd Annual Community Open House to learn about current trends in research and treatment for Spinal Cord Injuries. Among the topics discussed were the latest research on Neuropathic Pain (still no cure but many treatments are now available to help control the burning/pins-and-needles affect) to the latest research on Neurotechnology - technology using Brain-Computer Interfaces that create a communication pathway between the brain and an external device. It is hopeful that many with spinal cord injuries will be able to restore some motor function with the use of this neuroprosthetic device.

ADA Accessibility Symposium:

Ortho Pro was in attendance at this event, sponsored by Broward County, which brought industry experts together to discuss ADA compliance issues in South Florida. Accessibility code requirements were a key topic.

RESEARCH: DO YOU WEAR A PROSTHETIC LEG?

If so, earn some extra cash ($25) by filling out an on-line survey that asks about you, your health, and the things that you can do with your prosthesis.
