Update on Haiti Amputees
Haiti child
As many as 4,000 people had amputations from the magnitude-7.0 earthquake that the Haitian government says killed an estimated 230,000.

Those who lost limbs need elaborate follow-up treatment because the surgeons, rushing to save as many lives as possible, often made "guillotine" amputations - a straight cut through flesh and bone that did not leave enough skin for proper healing or cushion for an artificial limb, said Bob Horton, a nurse with Merlin, a British nonprofit medical aid group.

Results of the new Health Care Law...

Don't wait...call or write TODAY!!!

The Reconciliation process had the impact of eliminating the House-passed language that explicitly clarified coverage for "durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and related supplies" in the standard benefits package that health plans must offer.

The final bill does cover "rehabilitation services and devices" which has always been viewed as including coverage of O&P care. But this means that additional efforts will be required throughout the regulatory process to ensure that O&P is a covered benefit in the standard benefits package.

CALL OR EMAIL YOUR LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATIVES TODAY!

The Paralympics are over.

WHISTLER, British Columbia -- The 2010 Winter Paralympics have been declared closed by the president of the International Paralympic Committee.

Sir Phillip Craven officially ended Canada's first Paralympic Games before a crowd of thousands gathered in rainy Whistler, British Columbia.

Following the IPC President's speech was the official presentation of the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award to Endo Takayuki of Japan and Collette Bourgonje of Canada. The Award recognizes elite athletes with a disability who have demonstrated an exceptional level of determination to overcome their adversities through sport and the Paralympic Games.

Also recognized during the Closing Ceremony were the winners of the IPC Athletes' Council Election, which included Katarzyna Rogowiec from Poland in Biathlon & Cross-Country Skiing (275 votes), Todd Nicholson, Canada in Ice Sledge Hockey (203 votes), and Eskil Hagen from Norway in Ice Sledge Hockey (193 votes).

The Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games took place in Whistler and Vancouver from 12-21 March 2010, with events in Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Ice Sledge Hockey and Wheelchair Curling. To relive the Opening and Closing Ceremony, as well as the competitions of the Vancouver Games, check out the IPC's internet channel, the best source for Paralympic Sport content.
