ING's Race for Something Better
Terri says...

"I want to express my thanks to Josh with PR Racing and the ING Marathon for creating a Race for Something Better. My daughter is a student at Kenwood K-8 Center and had a great time with her friends experiencing the excitement of such a large event giving kids an opportunity to see first hand the importance of health and fitness.

I would also like to share my experience, as a prosthetist for over 20 years. The greatest pleasure I have in my work is not just fitting a patient with a prosthesis, but returning them to an active healthy lifestyle with no to minimal limitations.

Jackie Sparber and Josh contacted me to bring some of my prosthetic patients to participate. I was joined by Elena, a 15 year old high school student who just happens to also be a recent below knee amputee. Elena was born with a club foot deformity and after multiple surgeries over the years limiting her activity and greatly affecting her confidence and general health, elected to have an amputation last summer.

I fit Elena recently with her new prosthesis with a dynamic response foot and cosmetic cover and skin. Elena no longer walks with a  limp and in her own words at the ING event 'for the first time, no one even looked at me' she blended in with the crowd!

Elena's feeling of accomplishment after running across the finish line was something she did not think was possible before a Run for Something Better.

Thank you again for giving us this opportunity and hope to have more participants next year."

Elena says..

"I think the event was really fun and it was a good way to get kids involved. This is something you don't really see us kids doing nowadays.

It was actually a great idea to have all the kids join in the race, even if it was only for a mile.
Everyone seemed to enjoy it and they felt like they were actually doing something worthwhile.

To me, I felt like nothing would come from this and I only did it because I was asked to and I didn't really want to say no, but I am quite happy now that I went through with it. If it wasn't for the race I think I still would not have realized my potential and I would not have known that I can take off where I left off before all these problems occurred.

I now want to begin to take part in more events like these, it makes me feel like I have actually accomplished something.

Hopefully if I keep working hard and keep practicing, I can soon take part in soccer again, I really do miss sports, even the running all around the field part."

ACA Has Big News!
Dr Skoski
The Amputee Coalition of America (ACA) announces the establishment of the Christina Skoski, M.D., Scholarship Fund. This year, the fund will award a $1,000 scholarship to a student with limb loss who has a special desire to learn, exhibits potential for success, and plans to attend a four-year college.

The scholarship fund was initially endowed with $25,000 from Christina Skoski, M.D., and the ACA hopes to see it grow in the future through matching gifts. Donations are tax-deductible and can be made to the Christina Skoski, M.D., Scholarship Fund.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be amputees and have a minimum high school grade-point average (GPA) of 3.5 and a minimum ACT score of 30 or SAT score of 1340. They must also submit a letter of recommendation from a high-school adviser. Additionally, the student or his or her parent or legal guardian must be a current member of the ACA. All majors are welcome.

Applications are accepted only by online submission

The application deadline for fall 2009 consideration is March 1, 2009.

The scholarship recipient will be announced no later than May 31, 2009, and will also be announced at the ACA National Conference in June.
