 Dave LeesGreetings!

Very glad spring is here. The days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer and nature is waking up again - always a good time of year I reckon. I've just got out into the garden for the first major tidy up of the year. Boy do my muscles ache now! Far too unfit!

Time to spring clean at work as well as at home. Clear out the cobwebs and the unwanted stuff and replace with new clean fit for purpose processes and promotions. Growth is on its way!

Hence a growth and development theme this month.

Seek to Understand
'Walk a mile in another man's shoes to find what life is like for him'

Big shoesHave you ever experienced working with, or dealing with, an individual who only seems to have one way of doing things? Have you noticed that often with these people the 'one way' is their way and that they seem particularly insensitive to any other approach than their own?
I had a boss like this once, a small-minded man with a big ego who did nothing but make life miserable for his subordinates! Yes folks, we all meet them!

The reason I want to discuss this is to help when it comes to dealing with others whether you are selling, marketing, networking or working at the next desk to someone. With some simple consideration and application you can give yourself a wide variety of options for dealing with people. You will then be more successful than before.

What I would encourage you all to do is to work to understand the world as if you are the other person. How do they see things? What might be their understanding of the situation? What is their personality likely to think of it?

So some solutions for you to work on before you get to the point of thinking you are getting nowhere with someone-

  • Think about what might be the pressures on them.
  • What approach might motivate them?
  • What would they want from you?
  • How would they want to be treated?
  • Listen carefully to what they say to you. What is their language like? Can you match it?
  • Remember that to them, their approach is legitimate even though it may not seem so to you.
  • Always value yourself and your approach - it is just as valid as theirs.
  • Check their 'doing' as opposed to their 'being'. In other words is it just a behaviour you are observing?
  • Seek to 'understand', not to 'judge'. I sound like I'm talking from a pulpit but this is sound advice I promise.

This is simply about being more aware of the motivations and values of the person you meet and avoiding making judgements and interpretations on your terms alone. Work on any of these notions and you will find you gain rapport more quickly and your outcomes will be more positive.

Quick Tips
Random Practical Tips for Growing your Business and self-development

  • Big shoesImmediately before an important meeting or a presentation, stand up very tall and straight, smile to yourselfand say 'I am confident and excellent at what I do. this is good!' Smile even wider and off you go - you'll do well.
  • Ask for a referral from everyone you meet. 'Is there anyone you could refer me to?' They can only say no or refer you on - nothing to lose!
  • Set yourself specific goals in life and in business - I meet many who do not have these. How do you know know if you are successful if you don't know where you are going?
  • Reward yourself! I forget this! You do loads every day which is positive - give yourself rewards for achieving results, small or large.
  • Say thank you to someone - it will be appreciated. How often are your good deeds ignored by others? Isn't it great when someone says thanks?!

Thought processes stuck on self-destruct?
Time to think differently

Brain smallHuman nature is such that many of us sabotage ourselves, sometimes regularly, sometimes constantly by the way we think.

We can 'put ourselves down' efficiently and habitually with very little effort. Watch the following by clicking on the link, with my thanks to You Tube. Whilst it is very 'over the top' look out for what you do to yourself that matches!

OK, OK, maybe a bit strong but you know many of us do this to ourselves at least some of the time. So how do you change this? A response to each point made on the video.

  • Rewards and respect come from hard work and your input, often with some persistence. Reap your positive rewards when you have earned them! They'll be really significant when you have.
  • Treat being turned down, refused or lack of progress as a non-personal process which is more a learning opportunity. Realise that next time you will be much more likely to be successful. Remember people say 'no' for many reasons most of which are for their personal issues and reflect on them and their situation, not on you.
  • Focus on solutions, on how to bring about positive results in every situation you find yourself.
  • Minimise blocks and issues in your mind. Put them clearly into perspective. Ask yourself, 'What does this really count for in the grand scheme of life?' More often than not it will be relatively meaningless.
  • Say thanks with grace to those who express appreciation. Thank yourself for the good things you do. These far outweight the negative! Remember this!
Book Review
Working with Emotional Intelligence.
Daniel Goleman

Goleman WWEII'd argue that anyone who has read Goleman's original book on emotional intelligence will enjoy this sequel even more. The articles in this months tipsletter are very much about seeking to grow your own emotional intelligence. Working with Emotional Intelligence is about how to be more successful at work, how to improve your relations with colleagues and clients. It is about how to gain promotion.
Read this book and it will help you turn basic emotional intelligence into emotional competency. You can use this to turn difficult situations into positive experiences with mutually profitable outcomes.
What better for today's difficult environment!

As usual, click on the book picture and you will be taken to my website from where you can purchase the book at Amazon prices.
