  • Write an editorial or get an enthusiastic student to do it for you - send it to local free publications e.g. Good For Business, Local News, Parish newsletters etc. they are alway looking for content and it is free. They will edit it.

  • Include pictures.

Keeping your mind un-cluttered

In the second edition of this publication I talked about using a small dictaton device to record ideas when stuck in a traffic jam. Well, such a device has other uses - days are busy - how do you remember all your thoughts, ideas, things to do?

  • Keep your recorder with you at all times and record your thoughts.
  • Check it each morning as you start work and act on each recording.
  • Alternatively keep a small notebook and do the same.

This can help you get to sleep if you are the type of individual whose mind works overtime when trying to sleep. Write your thoughts down as bullet points and it empties your mind allowing you to sleep easier. Try it! It works!

Greetings!

Thank you once again for reading this publication, your time is much appreciated and I trust you will benefit from reading it.

In this issue I am starting a series on tips for making presentations. To begin, you need to plan so I am beginning with the process of mind-mapping to use as planning tool.

There are the usual tips and wrinkles amongst other topics.

Making a Presentation

The vast majority of people have to make a presentation, a speech or some sort of public talk in their lives. If you are in business then it is a guaranteed task. An interesting thing is that the vast majority of us are so often ill-prepared to do this and probably really wish to avoid it. Some people even have quite a severe phobia about doing it!

So how do you overcome your issues and make sure that you do a good job? Well - this is the first in a series of articles which I'll be writing in my newsletters over the next few months aimed at helping you improve your effectiveness as a presenter.

Mind Mapping

Before I can get into details of how to present, there is one technique , Mind Mapping, which I want to share with you. A technique which is so valuable, it can be used for many more projects than preparing a talk or presentation for example taking notes, brainstorming, project planning to name but a few.

IntegritUs Workshop

The above is a picture of a mind map I drew to plan out these articles.

This is a technique for which I owe thanks to Tony Buzan whose book I read many years ago now and have referred to ever since.

I recommend them because of their versatility and the match to the 'radiant thinking' style of the human mind.

The principles of use are:
  • Main subject in the middle
  • Main branches are key headings
  • Sub-branches are sub-headings
  • Write single words where you can
  • Write on top of the lines to allow expansion of sub-branches
  • Line length only long enough to match the word
  • Use colour
  • Use numbering to help order of priority or sequence
  • Use little pictures to help clarify if you wish
The reason for introducing this technique is that is invaluable for preparing and delivering a presentation. Your whole presentation should be able to fit on a postcard sied mind map. I'll explain how next month. The problem with using a list which many people do is that a list is limited by space and it is difficult to add sub-headings an ideas when you have created the list. With mind maps you can be free-thinking and be able to record your thoughts as you go under relevant headings. They are also flexible to expand as necessary.

A great FREE piece of Mind-mapping software is 'Freemind' - click on the word freemind to go to the download site. It is a good and reasonably intuitive program.
Relax & De-Stress
Organise your 'inbox'.

IntegritUs WorkshopNowadays we are bombarded with information through e-mail, phones, the post and other media. This often causes us stress - how do you prioritse what to deal with first. I am sure most of us have felt completely overwhelmed at times wth the quantity of 'stuff' we have to deal with.
The model above shows you one method of dealing with it all. On your computer create three files and on your desk at work buy four in-trays.
On the computer label the files B,C & D. Leave your A's (Urgent and Important) in your inbox. Put B, C & D's in their relevant files. Deal with your A's first. Then wrk on the B's. Plan in your diary when you will deal with the C's. If you feel the need, keep the D's until a rainy day or just delete them all! (Very very satisfying!)
On your desk, place physical copies in the appropriately labelled in-trays and handle them in the same order as mentioned above.
School yourself to spend 10 minutes each morning re-distributing documents into the relevant files remembering that as time and events pass the relative urgency and importance of each may well change (particularly 'Non-urgent/Important). This should be the first thing you do in the day.
Build a habit out of this and you will find life a lot less stressful. Get ruthless! Bin the rubbish! Be strict on what you keep.
What's in a word - Failure?

Failure - learnUgghhhhh! As a personal development coach, how I loathe the word failure - at least when applied to people.
Machines fail, brakes fail anything mechanical can fail.
To think of others as failures is inexcusable as well as being arrogant! To think of ourselves as being a failure or having failed is even worse!
This is not to say that as humans we don't get things wrong, we do! However, in the process we learn which means that the next time we can do it better. Also, in the process of working to achieve a result, whatever it may be, we have undoubtedly used some skill, been successful or achieved something along the way.
All too often people give up because they have 'failed' - often after only one attempt or even worse when someone says they are a failure. How crazy is that!
If Edison had given up we may never have had the lightbulb. If Steve Redgrave had given up when he didn't win a race he'd never have won five Olympic medals and so-on.
Never never never see yourself as failing - always ask yourself 'What have I learnt'?
