Issue No. 2 |
Greetings!
Facing a potential recession and the 'credit crunch', however long it may last, means that there will be less trade in general. It will be harder to secure your success than it was before. It seems reasonable, therefore, to propose that you will need to be even more efficient and equipped to make sure you receive your just returns for yourself and your business.
Now is the time to invest in yourself and make sure you weather the storm in a fit, healthy and profitable state. This month I'm offering more solutions, tips, ideas to help you maintain your 'edge'.
Of course, I am advertising in this letter, I'm sure you'd expect that. However, I trust that you will find the free information, tips and ideas of real practical use to you.
With all my best wishes,
Dave Lees IntegritUs Ltd |

How to de-stress yourself
Using traffic jams to your advantage
This is a familiar sight on our roads nowadays. How does it make you feel?
Up tight? Angry? Frustrated? Worried about being late? Stressed!!!!!! I guess you may feel all of these things and more besides - we all do at times when stuck once again in a jam.
Let me give you a great way to deal with this and use the jam and the time to your advantage.
So! What do you do?
Well here is a process to follow which is all about thinking differently!
First some thoughts:
- Jams are a natural hazard of driving nowadays - they are inevitable - so assume they are going to happen when you set out and allow extra time - I know its obvious, but to do so really lowers your stress levels!
- My experience is that very few people complain about late arrival due to traffic jams - most people involved are drivers too and understand. OK - if you are late to work every day then the excuse will wear thin but I'm sure that would not be the case for you.
- With Health and Safety legislation in place currently, it is probably legally questionable for anyone at work to apply negative pressure on you to cause you to drive faster, more dangerously or even to cause you mental stress as a result of factors beyond your control.
Second - Some options:
- Accept the fact that you are going to have to spend the time it takes to get through the jam. Getting stressed will make no difference to the time! The mind is powerful but some things it cannot do - like instantly blowing the rest of the traffic out of the way!
- Time in a jam is a gift. It is enforced free thinking time. Use it to your advantage - keep an updated list of tasks you need to do for yourself which require thinking time. You could keep a notebook in a car pocket so you can glance at it (safely - when you are stopped!). How often, in the every day demands of life, do you give proper attention and headspace to thinking through work planning, life planning etc.? Less than you would like? What an ideal opportunity. A word of caution - list positive issues - something you are working towards - negative issues may make matters worse.
- A small pocket dictation machine may be a good idea to record all those good ideas you are going to have!
Follow this approach and you may find a journey without jams is a lost opportunity!
Follow this approach and the journey will go much faster for you, you will arrive much fresher and it will be so much better for your long term health! |

Launguage Tip Using the word 'but'
In Neuro-Linguistic Programming NLP L stands for Linguistic. A quick linguistic tip is about the use of 'but'. This word is the precursor of a negation or denegration. It tends to 'write off' the previous statement e.g. I like you but can't you change......
Use 'and' instead! Try it you'll gain so much more rapport! | |
A poor hiring decision will cost!
When you shake hands with your new employee, do you ever wonder how long they will stay in the job? Whether they really will do the job you want them to do?
Research shows varied costs but common figures suggest that it may be about three times average salary for the role!
Solutions:
Work on the principle of - 'If in doubt chuck them out!' - Do not be tempted to take a risk. If you have a nagging doubt then do not hire. You are likely to be right and being kind or under pressure to fill a role will not serve you well.
Ensure you or your hiring personnel have good training in recruitment. Asking questions about marital status, child care, family intentions and many more unacceptable enquiries are likely to land you in hot water and could cost you dearly in time, money and litigation.
Use a specialist recruitment agent.
Ensure more than one recruiter is involved.
Use more than one assessment method.
Research shows that the predictive accuracy of assessment of the following methods used alone is:
References 13%
Unstructured Interviews 31%
Personality Tests 38%
Assessment centres 41%
Ability tests 54%
Work sample tests 55%
Structured interviews 62%
Where 100% would be perfect prediction.

Tips & Wrinkles Article Subtitle
- When networking if you are happy for others to join your conversation, stand at an angle to the person you are speaking to - an open position. If not, face them directly - closed position.
A 'closed' group
An 'open' stance
- Ever had trouble remembering a persons name? Try this - look at them and think what animal they would be if not human and, in your imagination, give the animal their hairstyle - then give the animal their name....to do so will help you remember.
- If you don't want to go to the trouble of the previous tip then don't worry about it - just use your lack of memory as a chance to ask for their name. Then get to know what they do, what their motivations for being there are. You'll be surprised at how flattered they are that you want to know! Who knows it could, in the right circumstances, be the start of a beautiful friendship!
