Coaching - Should you invest?

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) in their 2007 factsheet on coaching say that coaching is an 'ever popular tool for supporting personal development'.

In their Learning and development survey (2007) more than 60% of their respondents recorded use of coaching in their organisations.

In the same survey 76% believe that coaching activities are losely linked to business goals.

An article by Ian Brumwell in the periodical Strategic HR Review Jul/Aug 2006 defines how BT retail have used coaching in their organisation 'enabling it to increase capacity and productivity by 11.2 percent - higher than its target of 10.9 percent - across its 12,000 BT Retail Online employees in the UK'.

Some positive data here. So should you invest? It would seem so! Coaching is a new industry and needs careful consideration before investment. More evidence here in future editions.

Why do people buy and what should you consider when selling to them? A quick review to help you and your business.

People buy to fulfil a need. The process of doing so takes them from a less desirable state of being to a more desirable state. Why do you buy toothpaste? Well to keep your teeth clean of course! Why do that? Well if your teeth are all rotten and stinky it might be painful, physically, for you. It will make you less socially acceptable! etc. etc.

The needs of a client are modified by their values, beliefs and feelings. Do you value minty tasting toothpaste? Do you feel that whitening agents are necessary?

Any product has features, advantages and benefits. Your clients will buy the benefits that match their needs as influenced by their values, beliefs and feelings.

So! What should you do to be effective in selling your products and services to your clients?

  • Manage yourself first. Be in a positive state which considers your client as a priority.
  • Gain rapport-speak their language or at least reflect your understanding of it. 'I understand how busy and stressed you are feeling-I appreciate the time you are giving me'
  • Listen and ask questions. Identify your clients values and beliefs. Ask them what benefits they need. 'So what benefits would a good toothpaste have you?'
  • Appreciate their responses and connect these with the benefits your product can provide.
  • Be honest-tell them where it does not match. No product is perfect. Credibility is more easily lost than won!

How to relax and de-stress at any time of the day!

This is a free (Neurolinguistic Programming) NLP technique to give yourself a boost at any time of the day. After all, nowadays, life is incredibly hectic! It will take you 10 mins max.!

Find a quiet place. Sit straight and comfortably in a chair with both feet flat on the floor and place you hands on your thighs.

Take two or three long relaxed deep breaths in and out and as you do so think of the last time when you relaxed, deeply, in your favourite chair at home.

Think about what you felt, saw, heard around you and breathe deeply, slowly and comfortably as you do so. Allow the feeling to completely flood your whole

body from the tips of your toes to the top of your head and the tips of your fingers. Enjoy! Bring this feeling with you when you get back to what you were doing and the rest of the day will go so much better for you!
