Spring "Computer" Cleaning

Now that spring is in the air we often stumble upon old computers we have stashed into our closets, attics, and garages.

The EPA has estimated that 29.9 million desktops and 12 million laptops were discarded in 2007. That's over 112,000 computers discarded per day! The EPA also estimated that 31.9 million computer monitors were discarded in 2007. (Both flat panel and CRTs.)

E-WasteIf you are unsure what to do with this old equipment there are many options out there today.  I would like to first point out that if you do recycle a computer make sure you have copied or backed up the data off the hard drive and have the hard drive properly wiped clean.  I actually recommend the hard drive be carefully removed from the computer and stored away in case any important files were not moved over to your new computer.  It's very typical that people overlook copying last year's electronic tax returns.  The actual physical hard drive is smaller than the size of a VHS tape and located inside your tower, desktop, or notebook.

Computers, or at least some of their parts, can be put back into good use if we all try hard enough to save them from landfills.  If they are in working condition they can be donated to senior centers or less fortunate families.

Did you know that Need Computer Help? Inc. offers free pick up and proper disposal of old computer equipment? This is computer recycling at its finest! We realize it's hard to find convenient drop off locations for computer recycling so we will come to you. We can recycle, reuse, donate or properly dispose of most computer equipment and parts.
Computer running slow these days?

If your computer is running slow you may not need to purchase a new one.  For the most part a ram upgrade and a proper tune up can squeeze a little more life out of your existing computer.  Microsoft Windows XP can still be utilized for word processing and general internet use.  With a proper tune up performed I have seen XP computers run faster than computers running Vista.

How do you know if you need a ram upgrade?  You can find out on a PC how much ram you have by right clicking on My Computer and then clicking on properties. Toward the middle of the screen you will see the amount of ram you have.  On a Mac you can click on the apple icon in the top left hand corner then click on "about this mac".  Compare your findings to the list below to see if you need a memory upgrade.
Slow Computer
- If you are running XP you should have 1 Gig of ram.

- If you are running VISTA you should have 4 Gig of ram.

- If you are running Windows 7 you should have 4 Gig of ram.

- If you're running Mac OSX you should also have 4 Gig of ram.

Ram in your computer is equivalent to short term memory in a brain and should not to be confused with your hard drive which is where your computer stores files long term.
A proper tune up consists of running the following tasks in order.

- Running the operating system updates

- Running an application and internet temporary file clean up

- Running a malware, spyware, and anti-virus scan to remove additional junk you computer may have picked up along the way on the internet.

- Removing unused programs and startup Items

- Defragmenting your hard drive

If you haven't had a tune up in a year it will make a huge difference. Tune ups should be ran about once a month.

Defragmenting your hard drive is equivalent to organizing a book shelf and putting everything in its place so you can find it quicker.  Computers are designed to save files quick and therefore save them where ever they want on your hard drive.  This makes your computer take longer when you boot up, load programs or retrieve files.
Be Aware Of Fake E-mails

Be aware of fake e-mails claiming a package delivery attempt was made asking you to click on an attachment to get the tracking information.  There are many variants of this e-mail virus going around when you see the e-mail simply delete it and empty your deleted items.  Do not open the attachment you will ge a very bad virus. Here is just one example of what the fake e-mail looks like.
