Green Thumb Garden Program
Susan Bowling, Anderson County Community Action Commission

Garden It's spring and time to plant gardens and enjoy the out of doors.

The Green Thumb Garden program, a UWAC funded program, provides a means by which eligible residents of Anderson County can grow their own gardens. These gardens in turn stretch already limited resources.

Last summer (2009) 258 household received supplies to grow their own food. 81% of these served said that their gardens supplies helped their budget. When we ask them the number of jars canned or packages frozen the responses often are "a freezer full", all my jars, or a wheel barrow of potatoes.

The Green Thumb Garden Program founded in 1972 is funded by United Way, with support from churches, civic groups, local government, and interested individuals.  Applications are still available. For more information call Angie Simonds at 457-5500.
