Anderson County - Stepping Up
2009 Campaign Chair Leigha Edwards and our newest Volunteer, Hudson
We welcome Poly One to the UWAC Family
I am truly amazed and humbled to witness how we in Anderson County step up when times are tough. We all have heard how difficult things are in American, and across the world. Yet, we are seeing neighbors reach out to one another. In Clinton, Poly One completed their first ever United Way campaign in an effort to aid their neighbors. In Oak Ridge, ORNL National Laboratory completed it's United Way Campaign and raised over $1,000,000 to help throughout East Tennessee. Other campaigns are starting up or are in full swing, and we are increasing hopeful that we will be able to sustain funding to our community partners next year due to your generosity.
And demands for services continue to rise. Project Lifesaver referrals are steady flowing in and more and more seniors and their caregivers can rest at ease. Food pantries are near bare, requests for Holiday Baskets are at an all time high, and as winter looms, people worry about paying their heating bill.
The call to action is being heard. People who can are digging a little deeper this year, and for that we are deeply grateful.

ARC of Anderson County:
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month
The U.S. Department of Labor announced "Expectation + Opportunity = Full Participation" as the official theme for October's National Disability Employment Awareness Month. It is intended to urge employers, as they seek to fill positions, to embrace the richness of America's diversity by considering the talents of all workers, including workers with disabilities. Examples of possible initiatives within your company are:
Participate in Disability Mentoring Day - give some of your employees the opportunity to engage face-to-face with students with disabilities from your community.
Feature an employee with a disability in your company's newsletter.
Hold a special "brown bag" lunch for your employees. Feature a guest speaker or a panel of your own employees with disabilities.
Investigate new recruiting partnerships with the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, Goodwill, or other organizations in your communities such as Emory Valley Center.
If you don't already have one, form a Disability Employee Network in your organization to help make your workplace and products more disability-friendly.
