2009 Campaign Goal: $1,425,000

"Unprecedented times require unprecedented solutions", according to 2009 UWAC Campaign Chair Leigha Edwards in announcing the 2009 UWAC annual campaign goal of $1,425,000. In announcing this ambitious goal, Edwards reflected on the purpose of the goal, indicating that the dollars raised is merely a means to an end, keeping critical services available to our neighbors.

"Reaching this level of financial support will enable UWAC to keep funding to our community partners, and more importantly, their services, stable in the coming year", Edwards said. Keeping services stable under current economic realities is UWAC's first goal in the coming year. Keenly aware that demand for services are increasing while resources are decreasing, the 2009 UWAC Campaign Cabinet developed clearly defined plans for reaching that goal.

"A goal without a plan is merely a dream," Edwards pointed out. "And we have an ambitious goal, clear plans, and the talented people to enact those plans". Joining Edwards in championing the United Way campaign this year are: Belinda and Ralph Aurin, Bob Smallridge, David Bradshaw, Brenda Curtis, Jim and Marilyn Reafsynder, Gene Caldwell, Pat Postma, David McCoy, Martha Drewry, D.Ray Smith, Mike Watkins, and Betsy Prine.

"We all know the problems facing us." Edwards said. "I am excited to be part of a team that is completely focused on solutions. Last year our community demonstrated its compassion and enabled our United Way to be one of only three in Tennessee to reach its goal. Let's prove that was not a one time event!"

Holley Lowe (Little Sister) and Heather Finney (Big Sister)
Holly & Heather

Big Brothers, Big Sisters partner with UWAC

Holley is a sophomore at Clinton High School who enjoys playing softball, reading books and learning about animals.  Holley, a member of the Clinton High School Tennis Club, volunteers at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, an experience she hopes will prepare her to be a nurse one day.
Holley has lived with her grandmother since her mother passed away.  Holley's grandmother says she knew a mentor would never take the place of Holley's mom, but hoped a Big Sister could provide her another positive influence.  Holley agrees and says she was hoping for a Big Sister who was "fun and a good role model."
In September of 2008, Heather came along.  Holley describes her Big Sister Heather as "adventurous and exciting."
"Being matched with a Big Sister is a lot of fun," she says.  "First, we were just kind of nervous around each other.  Now, Heather and I do a lot of different stuff together."
Heather feels the same way about being matched with her Little Sister and says she is amazed at how their
friendship has developed.
"Holley has taught me to embrace my inner child and to remember that being silly every once in a while is a must for a great quality of life," Heather says.
The pair enjoys many activities including going to movies, playing tennis and searching for "good deals" at McKay Used Books.  And, they recently took a trip to watch the fireflies in the Smoky Mountains.
"I think each new experience we have helps Holley
develop a multidimensional view of life which allows her to make more informed choices for anything she encounters," Heather says. "And Holley has inspired me to be more creative and active in experiencing new things, to ignore my inner critics and, best of all, has allowed me to see the importance of helping others."
Heather says she looks forward to seeing Holley continue to embrace her intelligence and talent as their friendship develops.
