UWAC Vice President of Fund Distribution announces supplemental funding for 2009

 Sherry B

Unique to the 2009 Fund Distribution Process was the excessive impact of the economic downturn on our neighbors. To address these growing needs, UWAC Board of Directors established two funding pools - one for general allocations which included a 3% increase above last years funding levels and a second pool of $25,000 to assist people affected by unemployment. The second pool was allocated evenly with 50% of those funds going to programs providing food assistance and 50% going to programs providing utility and rent assistance.

"Unemployment increased from 5.4% last year to 9.4% this year," Browder stated. That equates to an additional 1500 individuals out of work. "The Board and Fund Distribution volunteers took the role of providing a safety net very seriously," Browder continued. After researching the nature of the needs of the newly unemployed and the type of support available, UWAC Board of Directors acted on the volunteers recommendation. The additional allocations went to:

Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties:
$12,500 for rent and utility assistance

Anderson County Community Action Coalition:
$2,500 for the Green Thumb Home Garden Program

Second Harvest Food Bank
$5,000 for Cased Food Program to help food shelters
$5,000 for Food for Kids Program

Ensuring a Healthy Start
HS 09

Sooth a crying newborn....there is nothing more frustrating to a new parent that this.  Healthy Start of Anderson County provides intense in-home visitations to teach new parents how to care for their infants, learn to read their cries, help establish nighttime sleeping, monitor nutrition and weight gain, and provide transportation to well-baby pediatric visits.  The families served by Healthy Start have been assessed as experiencing stressful life situations thus making the parents high risk to abuse or neglect their infant.

Research indicates that very young children (ages 3 and younger) are the most frequent victims of child fatalities. The National Child Abuse and Neglect Data  for 2006 reported  that children younger than 1 year accounted for 44.2 percent of fatalities, while children younger than 4 years accounted for more than three-quarters (78.0 percent) of fatalities. These children are the most vulnerable for many reasons, including their dependency, small size, and inability to defend themselves.

With the support of United Way of Anderson County, Healthy Start enables families to raise healthy, safe, and nurtured children.

Help Anderson County become a safe haven for all newborns.  Offer your assistance and guidance to new parents you know.  Refer high risk first time parents to Healthy Start by calling 482-4044 or visit
