Nearly 4,000 Anderson Countians visit Food Pantries monthly

The harsh economic downturn the nation is experiencing is affecting communities across East Tennessee. Thousands of additional people are seeking assistance for food from local pantries, churches, shelters and soup kitchens. In Anderson County the number of people visiting local hunger relief agencies that partner with Second Harvest Food Bank has increased dramatically. In one recent month, 3,886 people requested food assistance from Anderson County agencies. That's a 28% increase since January of last year.

As people struggle to make ends meet, it is great to know that there are several local Anderson County organizations committed to ending the pain of hunger. Second Harvest partners with 15 Anderson County hunger-relief agencies, 12 Elementary Schools and 2 after-school programs in order to reach as many hungry people as possible.

These partners may receive food through a number of Second Harvest programs. Knoxville Harvest delivers thousands of pounds of fresh food to agencies that operate kitchens and serve people hot meals on-site. Kids Café offers kids snack food or meals while they participate in after-school programs. Food for Kids offers Elementary school children backpacks full of kid-friendly food to take home with them over the weekend. Finally, local non-profit agencies may receive large quantities of food through our USDA, Cased Food, Scoop, and Food Purchase programs.
