We are more than a 97% Community!
It is said that adversity does not build character, it reveals it. And the character of this community is one of caring, compassion and action. The response to our recent request for the public to fill the void facing our citizens has been amazing! As the economy places so many of our neighbors at risk, this community shows its character by giving, doing and caring. And while we are not quite yet at our goal, it is within our grasp. We will celebrate more than a monetary achievement this coming Thursday, Feb 17th at 7:30 am at the Double Tree. We will celebrate our community's willingness and ability to step into the breech during challenging times. There are so many heroes to thank, so many individuals, businesses and volunteers who went above and beyond to ensure services to people need not be cut. On the behalf of all those you serve by LIVING UNITED, Sandy and I say Thank You. Please join us the morning of Feb 17th at 7:30 a.m. at the Double Tree to celebrate what we have done together. RSVP to 483-8431 or cfuwayav@bellsouth.net

Anderson County Community Mediation
UWAC Community Partner serving youth
Anderson County Community Mediation (ACCM) was established in 1986 as the first Tennessee branch of the national Victim Offender Reconciliation Program (VORP). ACCM has since expanded its volunteer mediation services to two other programs: Teen/Parent Mediation (TPM) (1998) and Access/Visitation Mediation (2006??). VORP and TPM provide at-risk Anderson County youth with a structured and guided opportunity to assume responsibility for their own actions and to resolve conflicts peacefully. VORP is a juvenile, court-ordered program. The effectiveness of VORP restitution agreements between victims and offenders is 96-98%, more than double court-administered restitution. The TPM program, with referrals from various sources, helps at-risk youth and their families develop positive communication and problem solving skills to address current and future problems ACCM's Access/Visitation Program assists never married parents in creating a more harmonious atmosphere for their children. ACCM mediators acting as neutral third party facilitators, assist parents in reaching a mutually acceptable parenting plan, which, when presented to Juvenile Court, can be signed as an "Order of the Court." The program's goal is that every child will have TWO active parents in his/her life. To date, no clients have returned to court with visitation disputes. ACCM depends on fully-trained, volunteer mediators, and all programs are administered at no charge. Our funding is dependent on individual donors and various foundations and grants. We are proud to be an agency of Anderson County United Way. ACCM's 13th annual Big Ed's Memorial Golf Tournament takes place on April 23rd at the Oak Ridge Country Club. Both AM and PM flights are offered. For registration or information please call our office at 865-463-6888. This is our major fund raiser; we look forward to seeing all the old crowd and lots of new supporters.

Cold Enough for ya?
Too many of our neighbors will shiver tonight or try to heat their home with their stove
What can you do? Check with your local Utility District to see how you can donate to Project Safe or Project Assist - a utility assistance program managed by Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties.
