We are Each a Member of Society...
"Public service is about more than just choosing to be a lawmaker, a judge or a mayor. It's about being honest in a tough spot, going the extra mile to help someone, respecting others, using resources fairly and doing something to make the world a better place."
Earlier this week this quote appeared on my computer via a Girl Scout Newsletter. I hope the Girl Scouts do not object to my sharing it with you. The quote instantly made me think of the Anderson County United Way campaign. We are all called to public service in that we are each a member of society and must be honest and work together by going the extra mile to help others in need. Using resources wisely and fairly is always important, but is even more so when resources are limited. We must now, in order to get our community through the tough times, do as our friends in scouting do and help those in a tough spot.
We are doing an admirable job of reaching our goal for 2009, but we have not succeeded; we have much more to do in a short period of time. It would be easy to sit back and admire our progress, but we are not acting as true public servants if we do not continue to actively push on toward our goal. Our campaign will close on February 17, and our best estimates still leave our United Way about $75,000 short of our $1,475,000 goal. This $75,000 is equivalent to 300,000 meals for our hungry neighbors. We are sure there are citizens or companies that can push us over the top. If ever there was a time to be a hero to this community, now is the time!

"GREAT RECESSION"?
Has the "Great Recession" hit Anderson County? If you look at unemployment rates, you will see that while we are not as negatively impacted as the rest of the country, many in Anderson County struggle to make ends meet.
2007 3.9% Unemployment
2008 5.9% Unemployment
700 newly unemployed in 2008
And a look at the number of people using our local food pantries, we see the same trend towards more and more of our neighbors needing our assistance. The following is from one of the 15 Anderson County food pantries:
Start of 2008 235 Individual monthly visits
End of 2008 503 Individual monthly visits
Many who had donated to UWAC in the past are now availing themselves of the services we support. If you have done all you can to help, thank you. If you are capable of helping and haven't yet, please do so today.

Cold Enough for ya?
Too many of our neighbors will shiver tonight or try to heat their home with their stove
