50 years is just the beginning!
Remember the Red Feather Campaign? How about the Community Chest, or the Chest-Cross campaign? United Fund? One feature of our community is we adapt, times change, needs change, people change and UWAC changes to address the needs present in our community. As we enter our second 50 years, UWAC is posed to strategically address three core functions: Basic needs, Youth programs, and Seniors. Thankfully, the volunteer leadership draws the best and brightest to ensure UWAC remains positioned to fill critical community gaps. |

As the 2007 United Way campaign ends and the 2008 campaign begins, we face the responsibility of campaign co-chairs with excitement. Tom Beehan and Kay Brookshire set a wonderful example of campaign leadership, and we hope to follow in their successful footsteps. Both of us believe strongly in the good achieved by United Way programs, and we wish to help our many agencies fulfill their missions by helping them have access to needed funds. It is our hope and goal to lead the United Way to another record breaking fundraising year. Dreams are wonderful. Missions are noble. However, sufficient funding is absolutely essential to make wonderful, noble things happen. We commit to help our community's dreams and missions come to fruition through the United Way campaign this year.

OUTSTANDING OAK RIDGE TEEN TO COMPETE FOR BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF AMERICA'S STATE YOUTH OF THE YEAR HONOR
Jimmy Bouchard is a true example of an extraordinary young man. At age 16, he has just been selected to compete against other Boys & Girls Club members for the Tennessee Youth of the Year title and a $1,000 scholarship from the Reader's Digest Foundation. As the Youth of the Year for Boys & Girls Club of Oak Ridge, Bouchard is among hundreds of local youth across the country recognized by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) for his sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community.
Jimmy Bouchard has been a member of the Club since he was 7 years old. Jimmy credits the Club for helping him grow into who he is today. Today, Jimmy is very busy with the life of a teenager, but also finds time to hold a part time job as a junior staff member at the Club. He helps in numerous program areas such as Education, Athletics, Drug and Alcohol Awareness, Peer leading, and character development.
"Jimmy leads by example and is a true asset to our organization," said Adam Wilson, Program Director, Boys & Girls Club of Oak Ridge.
If Bouchard wins at the state competition, he will compete for the title of Southeast Region Youth of the Year and an additional $10,000 scholarship. The five regional winners will advance to Washington, D.C., in September 2008 to compete for the title of BGCA's National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year receives an additional $15,000 college scholarship and is installed by the President in an Oval Office ceremony. UWAC Ramps up new Coalition serving seniors and disabled
Sometimes, it takes realigning resources. UWAC partner, Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties ( ADFAC) provides ramps and other household modifications for qualified folks in need. Yet, the Ramp Brigade is expanding what ADFAC can accomplish by itself. Atomic Trade and Labor Council ( ATLC) brings skilled labor, non-profit GooD DeeDs of Oak Ridge provides tools and talent; Rotary Club of Oak Ridge provides support, ADFAC the materials, Wallace and Wallace Coldwell Banker the coordination, UWAC connects the partners and now Penny has access to her home.
ATLC member Jack Clayton, ATLC President Garry Whitley, and ATLC Member Keith Wilson labor away for Penny
Andy Owen with Good Deeds
of Oak Ridge was
Forman on the project. Good Deeds is a non-profit agency dedicated to making home access available to our citizens.
Rotary Club of Oak Ridge provided lunch, T-shirts and a goodie bag for all volunteers.
The Ramp Brigade is planning its next project for early April. If you wish to participate in this effort, contact Rick Morrow ay UWAC, 483-8431 |
