"It's simple. We're just changing the world."

Surrender...the only way to live?

Greetings!...

Our team is traveling this week to deliver Passing the Baton workshops. By the time you read this I'll have delivered workshops in Ft. Myers, Sacramento and San Jose, and will be speaking at a homeschool conference in Houston. Sean Bevier will have delivered workshops in Florida and Colorado. Please pray for stamina!

Because of the travel schedule, this issue will be brief. I'd like to share an insight gained from thumbing through an article on how to survive just about anything. The insights from this secular article have great spiritual applications as we seek to influence the next generation.

An inside look at the Passing the Baton workshop:
The six-hour Passing the Baton workshop is the heart of this ministry. People who haven't been to one of the workshops often ask what's so special about it.

Well, PTB is a fast-paced six-session workshop that takes about seven hours including lunch time. We use lots of biblical examples, stories, video clips and discussion to mobilize participants to enthusiastically embrace the opportunity to mentor, coach and disciple the next generation.

Here are some sample responses from Monday's workshop at Southwest Florida Christian Academy in Ft. Myers, FL:
  • "I feel ignited! I look forward to mentoring my children and students."
  • "Great workshop and information, presented well--funny and full of stories--which is how people learn!"
  • "I'm excited to learn new tools to develop my mentoring ability."
  • "I feel encouraged that God will use my gifts to influence others."
  • "You made a scary topic seem doable!"
  • "It was thought-provoking. It took the idea of mentoring and made it easy to understand and less intimidating."
  • "I feel encouraged that I don't have to be perfect or have all the answers to make a difference in someone's life."
  • "God showed me ways to knock down the barriers that have hindered me from mentoring."
  • "This is something doable that will last for eternity!"
  • "I feel free to trust God with the outcomes of people's lives and to come alongside and walk with them."
  • "Very helpful in giving a fresh approach to the biblical responsibilities we have to mentor our next generation."
  • "The bottom line: for the first time I understand what mentoring is!"
  • "I feel much more comfortable with the idea of mentoring a young person."
  • "My eyes were more opened to the heart of God."
  • "Excellent--a blessing and a confirmation."

The Only Way to Survive is to Surrender
Question and answer timeOn our return trip from South Africa a couple of weeks ago I found myself thumbing through an article about "How to survive just about anything" in National Geographic's Adventure magazine.

One vignette popped out at me: "Surrender, but don't give up." Here's what it said:

The concept of surrender is at the heart of the survival journey. While that may sound paradoxical, it starts to make sense when you realize your limitations. If you are terrified, for example, you are more vulnerable in a hazardous situation. Ahmed Abdullah is an Iraqi journalist. When the war began, he found that he was horrified by the violence and in constant fear of dying. After years of combat experience, he explained the concept of survival by surrender: "Don't be afraid of anything," he said during a recent radio broadcast. "If you are afraid, then you have to lock yourself inside your house. But if you want to keep on living, then you must forget about your fears and deal with death as something that is a must, something that's going to happen anyway. Even if you don't die this way, you can die normally, naturally.... Whatever [you] do, [you're] not going to change this." Once you surrender and let go of the outcome, it frees you to act much more sensibly. It actually puts you in a better position to survive, to retain that core inside of you that will never give up. A good survivor says: "I may die. I'l probably die. But I'm going to keep going anyway." (Adventure, August 2008, p. 74).

"Once you surrender and let go of the outcome, it frees you to act much more sensibly." That's one of the key themes of the Passing the Baton workshop--to surrender the outcome of people's lives and walk faithfully with them as God works to accomplish HIS will.

Ironically, this kind of surrender brings an incredible freedom. By trusting God with the outcome we are set free from having to manipulate or control things.

Scripture talks repeatedly about dying to self and being a living sacrifice. What we need in this generation is the BOLDNESS that comes from a proper surrender to God.

Everyone dies, but that so few people actually ever come alive. Take a chance. Trust God for an opportunity to share His love. Introduce yourself to a young person who could use a positive influence. Reconnect with your kids.

The next generation is waiting for you to surrender and really live!
From Jeff Myers: make it a great week!

Please pray for our team. We're about halfway through a busy August and excited about what God is doing.
