"It's simple. We're just changing the world."

Waking up from the media-induced coma

Greetings!...

Our research has shown that the average Christian young man spends 33.25 hours a week in "screen time"--computer, television, movies and gaming. The average Christian young woman spent 27 hours.

Americans are truly, as K.P. Yohannan describes it, "A nation asleep in bondage." Other nations are quickly following our lead.  I'm told that the number one way Asian young people learn English is through MTV. That's frightening.

Part of the antidote is to inspire this generation of youth to "do hard things" as Alex and Brett Harris put it. Among other things, in our home, we're trying to light our children's fire for missions.

Many kids are bored by church because they don't see the exciting--even earth-shaking--things that God is doing around the world.

We at Passing the Baton want to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. God has led us to cultivate a global focus  and we're following that leading to some amazing places.

Just yesterday, for example, Sean Bevier and I met with a Christian leader from India who wants us to come and train 200 Passing the Baton workshop instructors who will in turn reach 200,000 Christians! The church in India is growing rapidly but is in desperate need of training in mentoring and discipleship so that it doesn't become a one-generation movement.

If you have a heart for God's work around the world, I'd like to get your ideas. Check out the article below, and enjoy this issue of Get Ready to Lead!

What sets a mission-minded child apart
In her book The Mission Minded Child: Raising a New Generation to Fulfill God's Purpose (Colorado Springs: Authentic Publishing, 2007, pp. 2-4), Ann Dunagan lists some of the distinctives of kids who are developing a heart for missions.

A mission minded child...
  • ...dreams of fulfilling God's destiny.
  • ...May want to become a missionary--or a teacher or a doctor or a newspaper reporter or a state governor or a pastor or a businessperson or an airplane pilot or an author or a florist or a mother--as long as its what God wants.
  • ...prays for that next-door neighbor.
  • ...is not a picky eater!
  • ...takes home a photo magnet from the visiting missionary family and puts it on the kitchen refrigerator.
  • ...is healthy, active, and adventurous.
  • ...spends a summer night sleeping outside on the trampoline, gazes up at a sky filled with twinkling stars, and realizes God's plan is infinitely bigger than his or her own backyard.
  • ...imagines rollerblading on the Great Wall of China!
  • ...recognizes the names of David Livingstone, Amy Carmichael, Hudson Taylor, and Loren Cunningham.
  • ...knows how to use chopsticks.
  • ...has a reputation for thoroughly enjoying the Bible sword drills and memory verse contests at church.
  • ...puts extra money in the monthly missions offering and feels extra good inside.
  • ...thinks it could be fun to sleep in a mud hut in Africa!
  • ...reads all the way through the Bible by the age of ten (or eleven or twelve)--and is excited to start again!
  • ...stares at the photos in the new geography textbook or magazine and imagines climbing to the top of that Egyptian pyramid, snorkeling in those tropical-blue waters, and giving a new outfit to that poor boy with the ripped-up shirt.
  • ...befriends the new kid at school.
  • ...thinks beyond the "box" of what's merely expected and hopes to do something big, or something little, for God.
  • ...wants to obey (even when no one is looking).
  • ...loves Jesus!
Igniting a love for missions--e-mail your best ideas
We've done a lot of things in our home to ignite our kids' love for missions. We read aloud from missionary biographies and we arrange for our children to travel with us to other cultures. I even pay them a penny a page for every missionary biography they complete.

I'd love to hear your ideas. I plan to compile a list to share with our subscribers. Please e-mail me here with any ideas you can think of--things you've done, things you've seen work.
Jeff MyersFrom Jeff Myers: Make it a great week!

God-willing, by the time you read this I'll be on the airplane to Maryland for our Wisdom Trek conference. Please pray for our team and the participants that God will provide breakthroughs for each of the participants, and a clear focus and listening ability for our instructors and coaches.

Make it a great week!
