Greetings!

Congratulations to Lauren Wolfe, Meredith MacKinnon, Karen Barclay, Fabiola Varona and Ingrid Verduyn for an excellent one-day Wound Prevention Conference. Sold out within hours of the registration opening, it was an excellent use of a day if you were fortunate enough to attend. Below are some 5 Point Take Aways from 3 of the sessions.

Spring has us thinking about scooters. Our product feature is the new Pegasus scooter from Invacare. Get ready to test your driving skills with our new products at our Scooters on the Bus lunch & learn.  Gain an appreciation of what is required for someone to get onto the entry level buses.

There are lots of opportunities for education over the month of April. Check them out.

We look forward to providing you with useful information throughout the year. Please contact us at any time if you have any comments, questions or topics you want covered by an inservice by emailing kim.mackie@selfcarehome.com.
5 Point Take Away - Wound Prevention Conference

The Wound Prevention Conference held in early March provided a wealth of information. The SelfCare team pulled the following points from three of the sessions. (The first point is illustrated, the remaining are on the attachments.)

Using the Braden Scale in an Evidence-based Program of Prevention, by Barbara Braden
1.    Turning is important and a schedule can be found on www.bradenscale.com/products.htm. This site also has a Braden Scale for Home Care.

> Barbara Braden's Session Summary

Preventing Pressure Ulcers and Promoting Wound Healing: The Banfield Skin Care Program, by J. Boily and G. Derharnais
1.    A good reference website is www.preventpressureulcers.ca. This site asserts that 1 in 4 Canadians in health care settings are afflicted with a pressure ulcer at any given time. It further estimates 70% of ulcers are preventable.

> Boily and Derharnais Session Summary

Incontinent Associated Dermatitis and Moisture Associated Skin Damage, by Dr. Mikel Gray
1.    Using a containment brief 24/7 is never acceptable. Take off the brief and get a good bed pad under the resident.

Inservice Listing

New products and new challenges! See below for a listing of upcoming inservices, including SelfCare's Scooters on the Bus session.

Scooters on the BusThe Scooters on the Bus session will begin with a comparison of the new Invacare scooter line to current products on the market, focusing on those suitable for the bus or handyDART. The second half will involve driving the scooters onto the bus. We encourage any therapist who has not tried driving a scooter onto a bus to experience first hand what their clients will encounter.
