Foam cushions offer a wide array of densities and can be shaped to conform to the user. The advantages of foam are that it is lightweight, provides seating stability and does not have maintenance issues. Foam does, however, wear and compress, so it takes careful monitoring of its condition and requires timely replacement. Foam is not a good partner with excess moisture. Even cushions with a waterproof coating and incontinent cover will break down if they are subject to excess fluid on a regular basis.
Even the most advanced surfaces can be ineffective in the prevention and treatment of heel ulcers.
