June 24, 2010
Greetings!

We are starting our series on cushion updates. Cushions are a critical component of a seating system and air cushions for maximizing pressure distribution and adjustability are a major player.

The Ministry RFP for Wheelchairs and other Durable Medical Equipment has been issued and the maximum limits for some equipment was included in that document. This is useful information for future planning.

Ramps have improved access for users of mobility devices. The Ramps Product Feature outlines portable and flexible options including threshold, suitcase and modular ramping.

There is one more inservice before the summer (hopefully with sunshine included) gets underway - Surface to Surfaces II on July 13.

We look forward to providing you with useful information throughout the year. Please contact us at any time if you have any comments, questions or topics you want covered by an inservice by emailing kim.mackie@selfcarehome.com.

Air Cushion Reference Sheet

Jay 13Air cushions are often a solution for clients at high risk of skin breakdown. Many of the new air cushions aim to provide improved posture and positioning by using foam in combination with air sections. Both ROHO and Jay have produced their versions of a combination cushion that uses a Jay foam base and ROHO air insert. The Jay product is the Jay J3 with Air Insert and the ROHO product is the Hybrid Elite. The J3 offers customization for the user with the selection of the pelvic loading area, type of insert, air or fluid and many other positioning options. Our updated Air Cushions Reference Sheet is attached.

Current Ministry (MHSD & MCFD) Maximums

There have been stated maximums for equipment purchases by the Ministry of Housing and Social Development (MHSD) and the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD). Here is the most recent list that was issued with the new RFP for wheelchairs and other durable medical equipment. A new contract will be issued for September 1, 2010. (limits apply to both ministries unless indicated)
  • $1500 basic secondary mobility devices
  • $3500 power scooters for MHSD and $3700 for MCFD
  • $4200 for ceiling track lift package/lifting devices
  • $400 for walkers for MHSD
  • $3200 for alternate positioning devices for MCFD
  • $450 for replacement G22 gel cell batteries (minimum 50ah) per pair including installation
  • $3000 for basic hospital/containment type bed
Ramps Product Feature

Modular RampRamps provide access. The guideline for using a ramp is one foot (12") of ramp for every 1" of raise, which produces a slope of 4.8 degrees. Often ramps are the final link to a successful discharge and are required for a short period of time. SelfCare sells and rents a full line of ramps including threshold, suitcase and modular. An environmental alternative are rubber threshold ramps made entirely from recycled tires. These provide a safe, no slip, smooth ground to sill transition and are perfect for exterior doors.
