Problem Solved! XY Tracking System
Need: The bathroom in a Group Home was very small which made it difficult to transfer residents. They wanted to be able to transfer a program resident from his wheelchair to the toilet and subsequently transfer him to a large surface for replacing incontinence products. The toilet was tight in the corner against the wall and there was no room for a bed to use as a change surface.
A decision was made to enlarge the bathroom by removing a wall between the bathroom and an adjacent small bedroom. A bed was placed in the previous bedroom area to use for replacing the incontinence products.
Issues: The heights of the ceilings in the two rooms, the bathroom and the adjacent small bedroom were different. The distance from the toilet in the far corner beside the wall to the bed in the former bedroom necessitated a system which would move laterally from the chair to the toilet and then down the room and across to access the bed. A single track, even if curved, would not provide the flexibility for optional transfer options - either from the side of the toilet back to the wheelchair or into the adjacent room.
Problem Solved: The ideal tracking configuration for a ceiling lift was the XY system. The XY system offers additional access points within an area. A straight track offers point to point transfers. A curved track provides access to other points along the track, but the XY system features a 3rd movable track that permits the precise position of the lifted person anywhere under the XY system range. With the different ceiling heights, a wall bracket was used to support one end of the tracking and a floor to ceiling wall post to support the other.
The caregivers are extremely happy with the flexibility of the system which allows for different transfer options for various residents. The SelfCare contact for this installation was Fran Wilson at 604-574-5801.
