"WHAT HAPPENED TO THE UC SYSTEM (AND WHAT DID UCSD HAVE TO DO WITH IT)?"

education is a rightThursday, January 14, 2010
4:30pm-6:00pm
, CCC Comunidad
Join us for an informative discussion with Dr. Jorge Mariscal as he presents the roots of privatization in higher education and the implications for access, research, and funding in the years to come. Unthinking the Nation State

unthinking nation state
Friday, January 15, 2010
2:00 to 5:00 PM, CCC Comunidad
Reception prior to this event, 2:00pm

"The tradition of the oppressed teaches us that the 'state of emergency in which we live is not the exception but the rule.
We must attain to a conception of history that accords with this insight. Then we will clearly see that it is our task to bring about a real state of emergency."
- Walter Benjamin, 1940

Leading our thinking are the University of California's students, the
majority of them students of color, who are meeting this situation by protesting for continued access to and the preservation of public higher education. This is a critical moment. As the Nation-State, in its various guises, retires from the social, Indigenous Studies reminds us that its very institution in conquered territories is the inaugural violent act, which places colonial subjugation at its core.

CAMPUS COMMUNITY CENTERS
Graduate Students "Got Community?"

Wednesday, January 20, 2010
12-1pm in the Dolores Huerta Room

Graduate students often find their campus communities "shrinking" as academic pursuits narrow interests to specific areas of study.  Come learn about the resources of the Campus Community Centers, the role the Centers play in building community on UC San Diego's campus, and how you can expand your sense of community and connection here at UC San Diego.  All are welcome to be a part of the conversation, and particularly individuals from communities that are often marginalized in graduate study, including women, people of color and the LGBT community,
